Cmon, I don't wanna eat my dogs. Thats a last resort, like trapped in the Himalayas after a airplane crash type bullshit. What breed helps you survive!!

Unfortunately, no breed is going to help you survive, if you can't feed it

dogs will let the people know you are there. they need food etc. what if they bark.

you'd have to shoot the dog to evade the hordes.

silent, stealth is what helps. Dogs just give you a false sense of security.

most dogs do nothing btw if you get attacked.

Re: Whats the best breed of dog to have in the upcoming doom, prepper situation?
We locked in a house in November for 3% interest. We had the hardest time finding a place and put in bids on about 8 different properties.

We were renting at the time with the constant reminder we could have been asked to leave as we were in a month to month lease so we could find a home.

The house is 50 years old and needs some work but my wife sees the potential and my daughter will have stability. (she's moved 6 times in 11 years for my work)

We are going to slowly upgrade where we can and take our time renovating as now's not the a great time to be buying building materials.

We hope to pay it off way early so we are paying an extra 300 per month.

I suspect the markets falls dramatically and if so we just sit tight and ride it back up. There is a major shortage here for houses in the mountains.
 Quoting: JimmyBones

Don't pay $300 a month extra if you have a 3% mortgage. Just save the cash in the bank or invest it instead.
 Quoting: Butch DeFeo

Well I do invest and put some into savings as well as a 401k and stock grant program. We intend of paying a little extra for a year or two and shave off some time. Appreciate the advice for sure. New homeowner so I'm all ears for opinions and things.

Australian Shepard

 Quoting: JoeyZ

Someone with a brain..

Have had nothing but aussies for 30 plus years.

Fiercely defend their home and people.

Most intelligent dog out there.

Train super easy even for complex tasks.

Perfect temperament.

I have trained my current aussie not to bark when someone crosses the property line.. but to instead, come and get me.

Which he does every time.

His job is to watch out the windows.. which he does all the time and if he sees anything cross the line, he comes and gets me.. I get the rifle and we take a look.

I Have english bulldogs so their bark is worse than their bite. What about you?

I suppose your dogs fire ar15's from their collars?

I thought you meant in a Chinese sort of way, just in case you get desperate.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80750453

Explain, what does that mean?
 Quoting: Dammien

Well as a last resort Fido may be chow. They do that in China not out of desperation but cuisine.

The best 'breed' of dog, is one that is your best friend.

My best friend, is an 86 lb Catahoula Leopard Dog. Seriously smart dog, and good luck putting a hand on him if he don't want you to. He stays by me every minute, sleeps with all ears open, nothing happens without him knowing about it.

A masterful lizard and squirrel hunter, is also a very good plus.

Pits. I have two pits and never a problem. Look fierce and sound the same and people stay away. Very loyal to the family. I have had a Doberman and a Rottie as well.
 Quoting: NJman1619

Pits are lethal, never use them in a prepped or survival situation. they will attack and kill other animals and vulnerable humans (kids) that will be seaking shelter.

That's why they aren't used by the military or police, its Russian roulette with an M1911.

See avatar. The bicolor is DDR bred, didn't know it when I rescued her, but glad I got her now. She's kick *ss. No one gets through my door to house or car door with her around.
I do have to do proper introductions and keep her leashed with new people, she's SUPER protective and a bit reactive, moreso than the old man was (deceased now), so I do have to watch her around strangers on my property or that get close to my car. With that said, I can take her out in public, NO PROBLEM, angel, absolute angel, but when it comes to protecting our home and me in our car, she goes from sweet angel to devil dog!

Caucasian Shepard or

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60467726

My bicolor DDR bred GSD couldnt do this, but she did everything else, including the walk of death at my trainers (only dog in her class that did it) first time I asked her too. Trainer was former military trainer and was impressed with her willingness and confidence to try, she's no slouch. I was proud of her.

My hubby and I had to take her through a lot of professional training (we did it during covid BS) because she's a lot of dog, but I'm so glad I did, now I have a wonderful dog. She'll protect me and she's good in public.

German Shepherd is my choice ..I have one ..the females are much more aggressive than the males as far as watchdog material...but Rottweilers and Doberman Pinchers are very good too... intimidating to look at too...or just your run of the mill pitbull...I rescue animals and I use to breed German Shepherds.
 Quoting: Halfbreedgal 83276748

Ditto, the females are the bomb, I had a lady that I bought my first GSD from (besides the one I had as a kid & the one my grandmother had) and she was a breeder too, for 50 years...is deceased now, but she told me, it's the female that will be first to the door to protect you...and this female I rescued (the bicolor) is that way :)

Cane Corso/Italian mastiff. The Roman's used them in battle. When mine runs at me, I can only imagine the terror I would feel if he meant harm.

hf I've seen those dogs going holly shit...I don't think I'd want the feed bill :)

THey are pretty cool looking though. And yeah, I don't think anyone would want to take one on without a gun.
