Mesquite Heat Fire in Central Texas Consumes 50 to 60 Houses - Containment now at 58% on approx 11.256k acres
Disaster Strikes about 170 Miles West of Fort Worth Texas

A disaster was declared in a Texas county as a wildfire has grown to over 9,000 acres and burned dozens of homes, officials said Thursday.

NBC affiliate KRBC of Abilene reported the Mesquite Heat Fire in Taylor County has burned 50 or 60 homes as of midday Thursday. The fire was only 5 percent contained.

Abilene Mayor Anthony Williams provided the number of impacted homes on Facebook Live Thursday morning, but he said the number of burned homes was just an estimate, the news outlet reported.

The wildfire that ignited on Tuesday took a turn for the worse, according to a Wednesday statement from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was 30 percent contained earlier in the week, however, as weather conditions worsened, the blaze grew to over 9,000 acres acres and containment dwindled to only 5 percent as of Thursday afternoon.

Hot M'skeeter Fire update:

"Yesterday with the lack of activity, it gave us a much better advantage on making progress containing fires," said Stuart Morris, Forest Service regional wildland urban interface coordinator.

As of Friday morning, the Mesquite Heat Fire was 9,613 acres and 25% containment, the same as Thursday evening. The fire has burned through rough terrain on both sides of U.S. Highway 277 as the road starts to climb up the hills.

Gusty winds Friday morning could complicate efforts to attack hot spots and flare ups and increase containment. Temperatures also are expected to reach 105 degrees in the afternoon, shattering the 101 record, and relative humidity will remain low."

As of a week ago, May 13th, New Mexico has experienced 30 red flag days since April 1st.

"In all, Breitreiter says the fire zone area has seen red flag wind conditions in 26 of the 36 days since the fire erupted April 6. Across the state, New Mexico has seen 30 red flag days since April 1."

Further north 10's of thousands of acres have burned in Nebraska. Two fire commanders have died fighting these fires.

Severe drought conditions have farmers worried.

East of the Missouri river into IA and IL farmers are complaining about too much rain.

The Mesquite Heat fire in Buffalo Gap is one of several large, complex wildfires are being reported across Texas. These fires have a potential to exhaust state and local resources. The Texas A&M Forest Service has raised the State Wildland Fire Preparedness Level to Level Five, the highest level of wildland fire activity.

Texas A&M Forest Service should be issuing an update at about 10PM CST.

I love mesquite powder in my cacao.
It's 15 bucks a pound from Peru.

Why isn't America harvesting it and selling it along with selling the mesquite wood for smoking meats and campfires?

To just let the trees burn away seems insane.

Mesquite makes great grilling wood imo. I usually soak chips and toss over ready charcoals to make a hot smoky mesquite cooking environment - great taste.

Not the best trees for harvesting fire wood - skinny branches and trunk compared to Juniper and Pine in the southwest. Both burn really hot.

As for wildfires, red flag days make it difficult to contain them and there have been many in the southwest this year so far. New Mexico had 30 red flag days from April 1st to May 13th.

It was one of the windiest April's on record in Oklahoma and in Nebraska two of the fire commanders/captains died fighting fires this year.

That can't be right given the conditions the last 2 days.

It makes a great gluten allergy-friendly flour. Can be added to food like chili to lightly sweeten it.
Even better in baked goods - not too much as the sweet factor goes a long way.

One of my favs are the pine nuts with hummus, olive oil and pita bread - yummo!

lol

Mesquite and Juniper and tumbleweeds = HOT fire plus the drought and the wind.

This is why members of the Texas A&M Forest Service's team said the fire was displaying 'extreme fire behavior' on Thursday.

Speaking of wind. The US Forest Service stopped all prescribed burns for a period of 90-days last night due to all the windy conditions.

In New Mexico a prescribed burn got out of control - Hermits Peak Fire (306,000 acres and 40% contained).

USFS says only about 1% of all prescribed burns become uncontrolled, but they perform a lot of prescribed burns every year.

New Mexico saw 30 red flag warning days from April 1st to May 13th.
