USFS Chief Randy Moore Has Announced a Pause (90 days) of Prescribed Fire Operations on National Forest System Lands
Today, because of the current extreme wildfire risk conditions in the field, I am initiating a pause on prescribed fire operations on National Forest System lands while we conduct a 90-day review of protocols, decision support tools and practices ahead of planned operations this fall.

Our primary goal in engaging prescribed fires and wildfires is to ensure the safety of the communities involved. Our employees who are engaging in prescribed fire operations are part of these communities across the nation. The communities we serve, and our employees deserve the very best tools and science supporting them as we continue to navigate toward reducing the risk of severe wildfires in the future.

Before prescribed fire ignitions ever take place on the landscape, extensive planning occurs. Landscapes are analyzed for prescribed fire treatments and the effects on community well-being, vegetation, hydrology, threatened and endangered species and other values. Extensive standard operating procedures to authorize prescribed fires include developing and coordinating a burn plan, site preparation, public notifications, weather and forecast monitoring and validation before a decision is made to go ahead.

In 99.84 percent of cases, prescribed fires go as planned. In rare circumstances, conditions change, and prescribed burns move outside the planned project area and become wildfires.

These fires are serious business.

Yes, California has had them for years, with DEW to blame by many. Likely culprit few years back when it was a topic - was PG&E.

They have no legal authority to make you leave your property. If you burn up, it's your business.
When you are afraid of losing your life, you have already lost your life.

Don't be afraid.

Sure.

There's a place (ruins) near Lake Mead called St Thomas.

Originally it was native Americans for 1,000 years or more.

Mormons moved in, in the late 1800's (to the best of my recollection). They thought they were in AZ or UT, but were indeed in NV.

The state of NV decided to tax them so many left and then Hoover Dam was launched.

One man stayed to the very end - paddled away in a boat as the water lapped at his house.

As for fires, no one will come back to help those who wish to stay and if the roads are choked off your phooked.

NM has seen 30 red flag windy days from April 1st to May 13th.

I posted this because of the shear amount of communities - not sure I've ever seen this many before.
