no, i'm not from the south but have lived in the deep south previously. i have american citizenship, but i hail from europe (where i also have citizenship)

When I lived in New York we always Depression cakes or old world Italian desserts on the table.

yes. Some of the best simple recipes. Have to eat it quickly cause there are no preservatives. Check out Silver Cake with Cooked "Marshmallow fluff" icing. If you like coconut. Grandma made this it was great.

That sounds Yummy. Bet it went fast. Have done a "Watergate Cake" with Pistachio pudding in the Mix. Also yummy.

Oooo I do Watergate salad like the ambrosia stuff super easy. Never had it in cake. If anyone wants to try Watergate salad mix an instant pistachio pudding (dry) with a can of crushed pineapple. Fold in a couple of containers of cool whip. Fastest potluck food with no cooking needed

hmmm, guess i'm thinking of world war cakes, which i thought were the same, they lasted and need no preservatives as they had no dairy or eggs and survived well he8ng shipped overseas in care packages, they were still delicious and moist upon arrival, etc.

here's a recioe from online (dont have m6 recipes right here)...i've never ujderstood why americans call these things salad, but what the heck

watergate salad

1 (3.4 ounce) package instant pistachio pudding mix
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, with juice
1 cup miniature marshmallows
½ cup chopped walnuts
½ (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
(or use real whipped cream)

In a large bowl, mix together pudding mix, pineapple with juice, marshmallows, and nuts. Fold in whipped topping. Chill.

you are correct. I expanded on depression era cooking/desserts to simple recipes. Mostly farm style because they had plenty of milk, eggs, butter flour and Sugar/honey. The depression was never the great depression to southern or eastern farmers. We were already poor but had saved up enough staples to get us/grandparents through even the war.

been all over. went to Montana in high school then back to Pa. Left Pa For NYC, Queens, Northern Jersey. Then to Phoenix for just over a year. Then back to Pa.

It is one of those desserts you can not stop eating. In family gatherings it goes quick. Never get it out of the fridge with just a pan and a spoon. You won't be able to stop eating. Very light and tasty. Super easy to make.
