I dunno the circumstances of this particular attack but one on one a man should overpower even the most robust and vicious pitbull or any other dog, two of them at once if you're very good in a stoush.

An unpleasant subject but these scenarios should be thought through in advance. Aim to get hold of the dog's throat and lift it somewhat from the ground, it will lose power when semi suspended. If it's already latched on, a hard thumb to the eye will put it in such pain it will lose interest in the attack.
