And thought struggles against the results, trying to avoid those unpleasant results while keeping on with that way of thinking. Honest question, because I really never even heard of this before last year’s exercise. I know that the Interstate System was originally designed for this use…but over the years they didn’t really keep up with those specifications when adding bridges, new miles, etc. “A person is smart, people are stupid.” “Nobody knows until everybody knows” |

Russia puts their air intakes up high to avoid sucking in debris from crappy runways and roads. Most of ours are not designed that way. I suppose the F-35 Marine version and the Hercules are designed to land and takeoff on a road. Justme |

All this within 5 miles of an international border and I've seen CG heli's do some impressive maneuvers. I'd love to see an Air Force jet land nearby. Eisenhower was able to get the Interstate Highway System passed, and throughout the interstate highways in America, mile-long stretches of concrete pavement double as emergency landing strips for military aircraft. Many Army posts, especially where division-level units are garrisoned, are near interstate highways. [link to www.army.mil (secure)] I guess the military thought it was a good time to reteach this skill. Correct…. Long straight stretches of interstates in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes were built to be as much as 6 feet thick to support the landing weights of the bombers and tankers returning from the Soviet Union, with no bases left to land at. No Bridges for several miles, with several areas of very shallow ditches to allow the aircraft to move off the highway, allowing others to land. 30 years ago, these emergency strips were easily identified by a small collection of Civil Defense Quonset Store huts placed at either end, surrounded by a barbed wire fence. These are almost all gone now, emptied and sold off thanks to Carter’s destruction of U.S. Civil Defense. If you know what to look for, you can still find a few of them along rural interstates in the Upper Midwest. |

I distinctly remember one story he told about this very subject. Basically back in the 50s the interstate system was designed to allow for plane landings in the event of a shtf situation. Also said that along certain parts of the interstate there were old barns and silos that secretly held jet fuel. I wouldn't doubt it. |

Pavement can't support the weight. Every road in the usa should be concrete like airport runways and ramps. |
