I share my biggest "Mandela Effect" with Brian Stavely (on Rokfin.)

The positions of Earth's land masses changed, in a significant way.

South America is much farther East than it was, and Australia is much farther North.

The Panama Canal used to run pretty much Easy-West. Now, it's North-South.

And, Dolly did wear braces on her teeth, or else the ending of the movie wouldn't make any sense.

I don't know anything about a Mandela Effect.

However, I WAS a Space Shuttle engineer.

Here is the REAL story:

SRBs (solid rocket boosters) are made in sections. They were designed that way so that they could be shipped by rail to Utah for refurbishment/refueling.

Why? Because in Utah you can find blue collar workers who do NOT smoke. Somebody sneaking a smoke in a rocket factory can blow the whole place sky high.

Also, the NASA Administrator was a Mormon from Utah, and he wanted the work to go to Utah. THAT is how design often works.

The SRBs come down by parachute and hit the ocean where a tug picks them up and hauls them to shore. However, one SRB had a hard landing and the sections got bent out of round.

No one noticed. SRB was disassembled.

The SRB sections went to Utah for refurb.

When they tried to assemble the sections at KSC, the bolt holes did not line up.

Some engineer suggested putting plugs in the original holes and drilling NEW holes in between for the bolts.

The bolts are one inch on four inch centers. In other words, they removed one third of the steel in the middle. No structural analysis was performed.

The NASA manager got a $10K bonus for "saving" the SRB segment.

When the SRB pressurized, it ripped open like a perforated sheet of paper at the weakened joint. The flame, which can be seen on the video, hit an attachment point, weakened the material, and then the Shuttle hit a wind shear which broke the attachment.

When the Accident Commission met, no one who knew about the new bolt holes said a word. THERE is your cover up. They were covering their asses.

Dr. Feinstein suggested that the O-ring failed. They held a press conference.

Finally, a United Technologies engineer came to the head of the Accident Commission and showed him that the extra holes had been drilled in the SRB.

He was told, "We already had a press conference blaming the O-rings. If we change our findings, NASA and Dr. Feinstein will lose credibility. We will NOT change the findings".

Thiokol fired a VP that they blamed for the O-ring failure.

So, THIS is why you come to GLP....for the truth.

The guilty party was rewarded, the innocent was punished, and the public never learned about NASA's mistake which cost them the bird and several lives.

Thus endeth the lesson.
