Construction companies are getting killed right now
We had a $400,000 job done at the place I work at over the winter. There were some delays and they still haven't finished. The company just sent us a letter demanding their money. Even though the job isn't finished. A subcontractor I spoke to a couple of days ago says everybody in the business is hurting for money.

They all quoted jobs six months ago at $1.00 a liter diesel fuel, now it's $2.25. Dump trucks were $80 an hour. Now they're $130/Hr. The sub said there are tons of contractors who are going to go bankrupt over fuel and material price increases, including the guy who did the job for us.

And one more thing, our business is down about 15%, my estimate, so far this year. The reckoning is coming. We won't get through the summer before it happens from what I can see.

The general rule is

"Loan long, borrow short".

that's how banks work.

they borrow short term from Fed (2%)
loan long to their customers (5%)
and collect the arbitrage.

that works great in an environment of declining interest rates.

it's a recipe for diaster when rates reverse
because you're now front-loading cash to keep
operating and most companies don't have the
deep pockets to survive the state change.

normally you'd get a crash and depression
but Covid ushered in the govt backstop for
everybody and everything. so we'll get massive
inflation instead, leading to massive shortages.

Where i live they are hurting because nobody wants to work for those wages anymore slaving away.

I'm seeing construction projects being completely halted because they can't find the manpower.

Absolutely. When things begin to contract, the first thing that gets cut is new anything. New capacity, new hires, new product lines, etc. Construction lives on new. If there is no new, there is no construction.

I keep hearing that too. And the sentiment that all new hires aren't worth a shit even if you can find one. I don't know what's going on. It's as if some huge portion of workforce just evaporated.

I just talked to the pizza girl the other day where I get mine. She told me the exact same story. She hasn't had a day off in weeks. That day I saw her, somebody called in sick... she had to take the shift... no afternoon off again. She is making tons of money though. She just bought a new little car, better on gas than the old beast 4 door she was driving.
