What an absolute shame... it's almost hard to watch now because it's a reminder of how badly we let them down. Other choices... Platoon Patton Full Metal Jacket The Deer Hunter Hacksaw Ridge All Quiet on the Western Front Kubrick's 1st war film - Paths of Glory (1957) However if you want a recommendation that never gets brought up try to sit through the Soviet Anti-War film "Come and See" (1985) Many people cannot finish the movie and those that do tend to have many sleepless nights afterward. It never made it to America - for obvious reasons - but no other war film in history has depicted the absolute brutality of war itself - the film centers on Nazi atrocities and general brutalities against the civilian populations during the invasion of Belarus in 1943. It's quite an awful experience. |

Platoon Apocalypse Now The Thin Red Line Full Metal Jacket Casualties of War all great films... You should have stopped after naming 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. |

They have a very hard time in getting anything right. There were a very few that held to the truth, along with good actors and actual war footage to make them good. The original Tora, Tora, Tora! is one, and The Longest Day is likewise great. The series of a Band of Brothers was pretty good. As for Vietnam flicks (most of my military era) most are pathetic. However, some are still quite entertaining aside from the sicko bullshit. Hollywood sucks because it tries hard to suck. I believe that when they do make a halfway decent film regarding the USA military it is because some important participant refuses to go along with their mini mouse, perverted ideas. |

Lester User ID: 4936038 United States 06/09/2022 10:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Patton is excellent, except for Karl Mauldin's performance. The Battle of the Bulge was incredible to see in Cinerama, great role by Shaw. Porkchop Hill is a good reality wake up; all those soldiers dying just for bargaining position. Hamburger Hill is another great film about futility and waste of soldiers by the big brass. Also have to include We Were Soldiers; great role by Sam Elliot. Blackhawk Down is urban warfare at its most intense. Try to imagine it without any air support. The Alamo with John Wayne is a great film. Henry V w/Ken Branagh is a great film. Fury is a pretty good tank movie. As much as I despise Saving Pvt Ryan, the D-Day landing scene is excellent. Movie really gets shitty when Spielburg has the rangers walking in file, across open fields, and yacking incessantly. So stupid. Das Boot remains a classic, as does Breaker Morant. |
