Same owl is under suspicion of killing our cat as well about a month ago. Another chicken has survived an attack by a Hawk and a Coyote. In both cases I came up on the scene while it was in progress. Hawk had stripped all feathers from the neck and was getting ready to grab and go when I got there. About two months later the coyote was chasing this same chicken Benny Hill style around the pen and tore off most of its tail feathers. I couldn't get to my gun quick enough so I shouted it away. Quoting: BeelzeBob Now the gophers are back to tear into our root vegetables. We got traps everywhere but they have eluded them so far. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83822912 All these laws about how you can't protect your livestock are absurd. Also hanging up old CDs can royally screw with the predator birds perception. Lets just say I have a "friend" who has done that once. Hawks are far too cocky. The owl is no longer on my good list. I have been running string across top of chicken field area for that reason but had a couple of big gaps for a bird to land. This last one was right at sun up and owls will be up and about until almost noon. They are surprising agile too so thinking it landed...walked into the coop and attacked. No coyote prints anywhere I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

BeelzeBob (OP) User ID: 81159457 United States 07/09/2022 09:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes, as much as I hate indiscriminate killing of animals, this is crossing the line. My "friends" action in dealing with the hawk may be how the owl gets dealt with. And for me it will suck to kill a coyote because they look so much like dogs. The ones around here are pretty big animals...as tall or talling than a german shepard. I would probably bite the head off of the gopher if I could catch them. I feel like Bill Murray in Caddyshack and I totally get his frustration. One of these things move about as much dirt as 4 moles. They destroyed ALL of our beets last year. I have four different traps and a sound-device that supposed to be unpleasant to them. If I can find a major thoroughfare away from food, I'm going to poison next. Nukes to follow. Right now I have string criss-crossing everywhere to deter winged predators from accessing the coop or pen. They don't like to get tangled, however I have watched owls navigate really dense woods quite gracefully. They are a large bird and hardly flap their wings to move through the woods. Also found out their hiss/screech sounds quite a bit like a hawk. I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

I've lost quite afew chickens to a shrew. It bites them, them goes for the neck, then eats half the breast and pulls out the guts. This shrew isn't bigger than 4 or 5 inches long, but it's sneaky and won't go into the trap i've set. |

My guess is you would cook em like chuckers or other small bird. Coyotes would be weird to eat...basically dog. Gophers...I'd skin alive at this point. I feel like owls would actually be really good eating. I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

I used 4x10s posts - and strung chicken wire over mine - and this years (first time in ten) I can't let my chickens free-range ... too many foxes (they climb and dig) and cayotes hunting in broad daylight ...getting push out by urban sprawl ... back into my fields raised beds for your root-plants should keep the gophers out of your garden ... and save your back some pain as well if you put down some (woven) garden cloth that might deter them too ... and keep the weeds from growing as well you have to be smarter than the predators ,.. I always found that putting blood meal around my beds keep the rabbits (and deer) out - and Neem Oil works great for all sorts of bugs- and so does DE in the soil - especially if you are using manure to fertilize it's a challenge - but you're up to it |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 83600865 United States 07/10/2022 01:13 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why don't you put your chickens in a predator proof coop at night? Chickens are prey creatures so naturally predators will be drawn to them. It is your responsibility to provide shelter for them. This protects them and also protects wildlife from you. Also, like the poster said a donkey or two will keep coyotes and other predators away. |

Also, like the poster said a donkey or two will keep coyotes and other predators away. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 83600865 It is my responsibility to protect them and that doesn't necessary mean building a predator proof cage. The have a roost and a night pen but it doesn't seal tight. I have managed 2 years with these birds. Lost one early on during middle of day while they were free ranging. Cause unknown. We ended the free range and built a fence for a bigger area to use during day. At night they are in a gated smaller area, but not a full cage enclosure. The only other chick we lost was due to a clogged neck, so only down 1 to predators in 2 years. The animal that defeated this system turned out to be a bobcat that had used a pile of rounds I had set up for the wood splitter. The pile was about about 5 feet from the fence and gave the cat easy access to jump over. How do I know? I was woke up by chickens clucking this morning looked out the window and saw the bobcat...large one, on the pile and getting ready to jump. He heard/saw me, paused for about 15 seconds and then took off. Last Edited by BeelzeBob on 07/10/2022 12:17 PM I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

But sadly after barely surviving multiple dogman attacks over the years, and having several other cryptid encounters out here, I know you are telling the truth.
