Anonymous Coward User ID: 83827278 ![]() 07/10/2022 09:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | With inflation across the U.S. hovering around 8%, the old advice to save money by eating at home may be more difficult than ever. Many are feeling the pinch at the grocery store, where prices have risen steadily in recent months. The “food at home” consumer price index rose 11.9% in the last year, “the largest 12-month increase since the period ending April 1979,” according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “The food categories with the largest increase in prices are cereal, meat, eggs and dairy,” said Alison Gustafson, Ph.D. and associate professor with the University of Kentucky’s Department of Nutrition and Food Science. “Given that the rise in corn has been very high and much of that corn goes to feed livestock, there has been a significant increase in meat and poultry.” A number of factors are contributing to the increase in consumer groceries, Gustafson noted. That includes supply chain disruptions and lingering effects of the coronavirus pandemic, worker shortages, environmental conditions, the war in Ukraine and “to a lesser extent inflation.” It’s all led to prices at the store jumping between 14% and 16% from the prior year. Kentucky is still in “relatively good shape compared to other states,” Gustafson wrote in an email to the Herald-Leader, but it’s time for consumers to be mindful of purchases. “Given that Kentucky depends on other states for certain products and as mentioned there continues to be supply chain issues with certain food items, this is a critical time to change what and where we purchase our food,” she said. Shopping from local producers and choosing in-season fruits and vegetables can help Kentucky’s farmers and perhaps ease the strain on shoppers’ wallets. Still, consumers shouldn’t expect relief at the grocery store and will likely continue to shell out more for the remainder of the year, Gustafson said. |

I'm more rational now, thinking 'is this a want or a need' when I'm shopping and I don't purchase unnecessary items (like at the store 2 days ago, I had the chance to reach out and grab some Queso while walking up the chip aisle and when I saw the price on the Tostito's and the little can of queso that goes very well with Frito's, I walked on by...the 'cheap' can that my hand used to find and just toss in w/out thinking, was $4.39...I was like, um, not gonna impulse buy this today...). Now, I do spend $...I buy 91 gasoline from Stewart's Shops in NY because that's the ONLY gas station in NY that doesn't offer shitty corn-mafia and government-grifted ethanol fuel. It 'costs' more at the pump, but I get 5 extra miles per gallon in fuel efficiency, so I'll pay for it. Thank you, Stewart's...the only bright spot about living in the woke Marxist state of NY. News Flash!!! The prices never come down and the wages never raise far enough to make up for the difference. Think on this. Back in the day the silver dollar used to be made of silver which is worth about $16.80 today. And during that same time the minimum wage was $1.15 cents. Meaning they were getting paid close to $19.32 if you were to calculate their pay according to the cost of silver today. Now let me ask you are minimum wage recipients getting paid close to $20 an hour today? Umm hell no. We are being ripped off and nobody notices it because its been happening over years but the unskilled laborers in the 60's were doing far better than we are today. |

I just don't get the govt calculations for inflation ... Here tins of heinz beans Rose like 50% in a week. The 8%/9% rates in our countries are so far off the reality its a joke now. In the UK, fuel up 50% on this time last Yr, gas n electric up 54% and more to come this year, food is 30% plus. Earnings Tax up, local council tax up, insurances up etc etc. Just HOW they still get 8%/9% relatively is beyond me! They fudge the real figures cos if they were truthful people would panic and the economy would nearly stop... ie, new vehicles and houses etc... where the govt makes a shitload in taxes... I am sick of being misled by govt when we all KNOW the reality on ghe ground, yet NO-ONE on the msm talks about this??? Instead we get interviews with rich cunts telling us to stop asking for pay rises to stop it rising while none of these issues will EVER affect them.... urgh... pisses me right off but we have no voice ever really, just rich cunts telling us what to do n how to live etc |

Obviously they don't pump gas or go grocery shopping. Try 100+% inflation guys!! Stupidest thing the .gov ever did was remove food and fuel from the inflation rate. It's TWO things people cannot live without! Food, water, fuel/energy, clothing and shelter should always be included in inflation figures! You can't live without those things! |
