There is a study that in any given moment there are about a few (I cannot recall the number) civilizations only in our galaxy but no actual civilization has ever made it to a safe point that would permit it to continue existing since there are many cosmic events that can wipe out any traces of life from a planet, e.g. supernovae etc etc. We have a star that will become a supernova in the following 10 to 1000 years (Betelguese) but we are probably lucky and won't be affected but we will probably have a gigantic show for quite some time...
