I have a friend whose son has been with a major airline for 22 years and is a captain. I messaged her on 8/2/2021:

Hi (my name) - I can only speak for our pilot who wishes the vaccine was mandated for everyone across the country. He got his vaccine last January or February, and will get the booster as soon as it becomes available. His youngest turns 12 next month and she wants the vaccine, like her 14 yr old brother. What are your thoughts as a nurse and former flight attendant?

But it’s an interesting question, and when we talk to him, I’ll ask his opinion. He seems fairly content with upper management, especially since the pilots signed a new contract.

From me:

Oh, glad to hear they signed a new contract....apparently he's good with it. I read that 80 or 90% of pilots and flight attendants already had the vaccine. I just saw an article today saying that (our airline company) pilots are opposed to it. That's why I was curious.

I am so against ANY vaccines. I never had a flu vaccine, a shingles vaccine, a pneumonia vaccine, so I'm not one to take the COVID vaccine.

My older sister lives in Philadelphia, has had the vaccine, and is in the hospital right now, with Covid-19, and not expected to live, but her lifestyle and quality of life have not been good for years. I, personally, believe that when it’s our time to “go”, it doesn’t really matter in the end!

Just spoke to a friend last night for four hours about this- he was a pilot for Alaska until he had back-to-back strokes last October. It ended his career, of course. He mentioned a couple things that I had not been aware of that should be considered-

-the cost to train a pilot now is no less than $80,000 today. That’s after they find one suitable to train, after vetting the candidates.

-the number of active pilots is so tight, that there is almost no margins for ‘back-up pilots’, meaning they don’t have a surplus of pilots hanging around waiting for a gig. If you’re trained and licensed, you’re flying, period. They can’t have pilots waiting around for nothing.

-pilot retention: cargo pilots are the ones making the real bank, and in the aviation field, it’s no secret, so keeping the pay and perks competitive has always been a struggle, especially when you can make over $300/hr flying UPS packages across the country.

-here was the most interesting thing he shared- the butterfly effect: if one pilot calls out sick in a commercial passenger gig, it causes no less than FIFTEEN OTHER FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS.

It was a sobering and informative conversation. Since his two strokes, his wife left him and he’s had to rehabilitate on his own. In the middle of that, he decided he needed to do something (humanitarian) so he took his pilot perks and flew to Poland- and that is a whole other thread….. fuck.

I asked about the insurance angle with the airlines and he said he was going to look into it. We are going to try and connect this weekend and I’ll bring back any info I gather.

I have spent 35 years plus in aviation. I'm a old guy now. It's about brain fog that they are not talking about. It's from the bioweapon they released. I'm around super smart people. We are all experiencing a challenge mentally after getting sick.

They kind of don’t? Given the number and complexity of flights, the accident rate is extremely low, and usually involve some sort of human error. If you take out mechanical error and human error flying is incredibly safe.

I work for Delta. We are short staffed all around. We've been training new hires as fast as possible. A lot of pilots retired when it became available. Including baggage and flight crews.
Delta offered religious exemption for our employees but penalized with an insurance surcharge.
Those of us who filed an exemption are watching the sick get sicker. Jabbed and boosted can't hardly make it to work. They've all had every variant under the sun. Some died some were damaged and some had cancer return.

We've known this, since they grounded a shit ton of air force pilots. It was bound to Happen for commercial air lines. They can't his the truth forever

Must either be specifically for international travel or the Anglo sphere. Europe and East Asia would still be able to get around internally just fine with trains. And the rest of the world not having a comparatively high demand for long distance flights. Countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia on the other hand, that don’t have good rail, would have their travel networks crippled by this?

Yawn, I was screaming about this over 6 months ago. Even led people to FlightRadar24 so they could verify it for themselves. I was called all kinds of nasty names for my trouble. Very very old news.
