That's not how it read to me at all. The "extinct species of giants" is clearly a different group from the mastodons. The way he worded it made a clear line of delineation.

There was the story of the Afghan giant killed by American troops. They wouldn't be that difficult to hide.

What in your advanced level of comprehension tells you that Lincoln was talking about anything other than mastodons, except looking at an out of context, edited quote and taking it at face value rather than rubbing a couple of brain cells together in an effort to engage in rational thought for a change?

Buffalo Bill also wrote about these creatures in his autobiography. Here's an excerpt from the autobiography ..
