WASHINGTON - The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the endangered list because of its fast dwindling numbers.
"It's just a devastating decline," said Stuart Pimm, an ecologist at Duke University who was not involved in the new listing. "This is one of the most recognizable butterflies in the world."

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the migrating monarch butterfly for the first time to its "red list" of threatened species and categorized it as "endangered" -- two steps from extinct.

The butterfly's mating place in Mexico is now a tourist attraction. Could have something to do with the population.

Humans are so stupid for the sake of tourism.

They usually travel south in late summer. Only hatching just now. This alert seems early.

My Mom has two hummingbird feeders and sees a few each day (New Hampshire). I saw ONE monarch butterfly yesterday and a few bumblebees lately. We were at a vineyard the other day and the flowers were full of honey bees. My brother has quite a few praying mantis in his yard.

I have not seen a monarch butterfly in 15 plus years. I pull into my driveway today and see one flying around. Then I see this thread. What are the odds?

Re: Monarch Butterflies get extinction level call out and no thread
It’s not just monarchs. Many pollinator species are rapidly declining, it’s just that monarchs are more recognizable and “marketable.”

It pisses me off when I see the advertisements for companies that spray people’s backyards for mosquitoes. They don’t mention that their spray kills all the other insects, too.

I have monarch and butterfly plantings in my garden. Milkweed isn't very attractive but it does certainly attract the monarch. This is the hot days of summer and I don't see them, yet. The hummingbirds are out and about early morning and twilight. I have about 20 feeders, and they use them, plus all the other flowering plants. They love the bottle bush, passion vine, pomegrante, crepe murtyle, tacoma, Mexican petunia and Mexican bird of paradise and hibiscus, the best.
As above, so below.

In Ontario... Gypsy moths were everywhere the last couple years. They've died back, the milkweed is back, and so are the monarchs. In my woods at least.

Have only seen one or two Luna moths though. Lots of Hickory on the property.

There were about half a dozen of them in my yard earlier in the year.

Then the drought hit, the flowers died and I stopped seeing orange butterflies fluttering about.

That's the issue that affected so many - those are grown in latent fields, of which there are not many left.
Same thing happened to the 'bob white" birds.
