Lake Mead, a lifeline for water in Los Angeles and the West, ‘unrecognizable’ as it tips toward crisis

Lake Mead, a lifeline for 25 million people and millions of acres of farmland in California, Arizona, Nevada and Mexico, made history when it was engineered 85 years ago, capturing trillions of gallons of river water and ushering in the growth of the modern West.[less than 50%] [link to www.register-herald.com (secure)]
:nova glass:

Let's face some facts in 1980 the population of Las Vegas was 146,000 today it's 662,000 , The population of Las Angelas was 9,300,00 today it's 12,9000,000.

With just these 2 cities that's a rise of 4.1 million more people drinking the water. More farms that need irrigation
:illwork:

While many are trying to blame climate change, I blame both legal and illegal migration on the water shortage in the Southwest USA. One more sign that resources are finite and should be protected from illegal immigration.

:stopill:

Politicians that don't understand this should be voted out.

Lake Mead could rise tomorrow if they cutoff the golf courses and farmers. That will happen long before Las Vegas goes dry.

Sorry haters.

Mostly true - over 72% of Arizona water use is ag-based.

No one needs to grow cotton, pecans and lettuce in a desert.

Of coarse. What you think happens they drink the water in LA and drive back to lake mead to piss in the lake to give it back?

Pretty sure Los Angeles is well out of the Lake Meade watershed.

When the AC says watershed, he or she means the source, which is actually the Colorado river basin watershed - upper and lower.

LA is one of the recipients of the watershed and reservoir.

Water shed maybe, but LA also gets water from lake Mead or so the article states.
 Quoting: Storm2come

What's interesting now is there was a compact for water rights to individual communities (cities) signed back in 1922. Based on the amount of water that flows on the Colorado river.

With the heat in the west a percentage of the normal spring run-off isn't making it to the creeks and Colorado river due to evaporation and extremely dry ground - this is also the case in the Sierra's for the Oroville reservoir.

Some cities like Grand Junction CO could potentially be denied some or all of its water. So, it's not just a NV, AZ and CA thing.

The compact, I assume, would likely be renegotiated.

This megadrought is causing a lot of headaches for water managers.

lake mead has been going dry for years. I watched a woman who was some muckity muck bigwig for water conservation for it and she was being interviewed and didn't even try to hide the fact that it was going dry and there were no solutions. There are very few people on GLP such as myself trying to make people understand that what you are seeing is the last book of the bible. you don't believe that, or even that God is. drought is not the only serious problem you are up against. There is an answer to all of it but it requires you give yourself to Jesus and he will keep you. it takes only a moment and costs you nothing to give one sincere prayer. You don't see fireworks go off when you do so you disregard your only hope. He made it as easy as he can to save you from all this, yet you can't bring yourself to jump into the only answer there is gonna be for you. You're out of time now. Good luck.

All of it, because the entire native population of that region was well under 1 million people before the Europeans came and took it over.

How many more bodies do they have to find before the water wasting states (and Mexico) are cut off from sucking the lake dry?
 Quoting: DeploraVision ™

Blatant DISINFORMATION!

Mexico is NOT "sucking the lake dry" - in fact they agreed to let their share stay in Lake Mead:

[link to www.watereducation.org (secure)]

In 2007 Mexico and the United States agreed to a formal process managed by the IBWC to discuss “a number of issues of mutual concern to both nations related to the Colorado River.” The discussions resulted in a series of Minutes (agreements) to the 1944 Treaty designed to increase cooperation between the two countries on management of the river.

Among the agreements, the milestone Minute 319 includes an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico that partially resolves the question of when Mexico will take a shortage in its Colorado River supplies.

Mexico agreed to take a lesser amount of water during times of drought in exchange for establishment of the Intentionally Created Mexican Apportionment.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80010885

Look at a google map, Mexico has huge farms just south of the border. Making good use of the water they get.

50% of the water in the L.A. Aqueduct is lost to evaporation. Yet no covers installed. Why?

the reason there is no water in the lake,

is because it is not raining,

stopping immigration will no make it rain,

just sayin,

but it does make for a good distraction to make people think that the election was not stolen,

That's a dumb idea. I grew up on the shores of the Mississippi. You don't want that water touching you let alone drinking it. Also, the West already killed at least 50 rivers for water consumption by damming them. Now you want to kill the grand Mississippi? I don't think so. You won't be happy until the Hudson is channeled to provide water to the West.

Let's make a lake in the desert and never expect it to dry up.
Jerusalem, my happy home,
When shall I come to thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end?
Thy joys when shall I see?

O Christ, do Thou my soul prepare
For that bright home of love
That I may see Thee and adore
With all Thy saints above.

The real solution is to free the Colorado River by removing the lakes. The evaporation from Lakes Mead And Powell are in the MILLIONS of acre feet over a decade
