It took 8 seconds from the time he jumped over the counter until the time he said "I'm dead." The frightened shop owner only had a few seconds to decide to defend himself. He had no idea if the criminals had weapons or not. I'm sure he assumed they did. There were 3 of them. The dead one had something in his hand and had on a backpack.
