Well, my financially challenged AC, yes there are realized and unrealized capital gains, in most people's retirement accounts and taxable brokerage accounts...

Those under the protection of IRA or 401k, cannot be taxed unless you withdraw early...and to propose taxing unrealized gains would mean they would have to give a refund if the market went down and erased the unrealized gains that they taxed you for...

I don't think the government wants to get into the annuity buckets, and guarantee growth by refunding taxes collected, when the market takes a dip...

Yeah America is deeply in debt and after the dollar goes, and Taiwan and Ukraine falls, it will HAVE TO PAY ITS DEBT, and maybe fork over some war criminals for public trials and executions abroad.

Where will it get the money to pay its debt? You.

Thus the IRS.

Ok I’ll say it again. There is NO unrealized gain tax.

Your IRA an 401k comment is stupid at best. You are taxed if you withdraw early and at retirement age. The difference is the PENALTY and clearly the higher tax bracket likely due to income.

Then you try to school me on “to propose taxing unrealized” which means you know that they are NOT but you would like to pretend they will.

You are BS and no they will never tax you on unrealized gains that do not physically exist as liquid cash income. I know there has been one or two times it has been brought up by a handful of elected officials but will NEVER happen because quite simply it would affect them negatively more than anyone else.

In that case, the tax becomes an annuity frontload payment to guarantee your investments...That might be a great deal! My mom is very conservative and doesn't want to risk a penny, so we put her into some of those buckets with as much as -20% protections...Meaning they refund her loses up to 20% downturn...and allows her to grow with no limitations...

The government will need to hedge their bets, if they go that route...

They already tax property owners on unrealized capital gains. Every time the government declares that your property has increased in value, they increase your taxes on the property, even though you have not received any money from the increase in your property value (unless you sell it at that higher value, of course). So the precedent for taxing unrealized gains has already been set.

I know there is no unrealized capital gains tax...I'm pointing out what would happen if they did...

A taxable brokerage account is not a retirement account, under the tax code anyhow...

A Roth IRA is taxed as you invest, but not taxed when you withdraw...but there is a 10% penalty for withdraw before age 65...

Traditional IRA and 401k are not taxed as you invest, but are subject to tax when you withdraw, at any age, but also with a 10% penalty if before age 65...

You nuts think that when the market picks up and you make 100k in your 401k or IRA that when you file your taxes yoi will have to come up with $27,000.00 in tax to pay…

People will have to sell their houses just to own an IRA or 401k… for just one year.

That’s beyond stupid. I would rather believe trees are walking on the flat earth gathering to watch the visible space war that was started over the sinking of a French sub in the Gulf of Mexico.

You are BS and no they will never tax you on unrealized gains that do not physically exist as liquid cash income. I know there has been one or two times it has been brought up by a handful of elected officials but will NEVER happen because quite simply it would affect them negatively more than anyone else.

They already tax property owners on unrealized capital gains. Every time the government declares that your property has increased in value, they increase your taxes on the property, even though you have not received any money from the increase in your property value (unless you sell it at that higher value, of course). So the precedent for taxing unrealized gains has already been set.

Not in Indianna.

They tax the "assessed" value, which is 1/3 of the market value at least...I look at my taxes every year and laugh at what the assessed value is, and I'm happy to pay less tax!!
