The Fed Sheriff has come to town and she's bringing rope - 60 days is up for SW states water crisis
[link to apnews.com (secure)]

The article covers different aspects of the unfolding water crisis in America's Southwest states. The Federal Government warned those states two months ago that they had 60 days to reach an agreement on sharing and cutting back on use of the Colorado River water system. No progress has been made. Several states had actually come to an agreement of sorts, but then California refused to participate on a water use reduction plan. Now the Feds are moving in and the states are looking at a possible 30% cut in water usage right out the gate. Farmers have taken the larger hit so far, but now the emphasis will be on residential cutbacks. More to read at the link.

First step, cut off the billionaire nut farmers. They have no right to that water. They buy access through politicians.

It takes a lot of water to grow almonds and pistachios.

90% of the nuts are sold overseas.

That includes underground (Aquifer) water.

The fast dropping Lake Mead levels were predicted in the event of even a prolonged mild drought (It IS a fucking desert, after all), when the new pipe tunnel to Los Angeles started construction 15 years ago.

But, we are all just right wing nut jobs, and all of the correct Democrats got big payoffs from the project.

Now you are seeing the results.

This is how it will unfold...

The gov will pay through the treasury not to use water in return for the loss they take financially. They will not comply and take the fine they will pay with the treasury proceeds. Then they will ask for more.

In most if not all of the upper and lower basin state members of the CO River watershed it is different.

A lot of the large aquifers are adjudicated. In CA there are appropriative and overlying users with different rights. If you own land, you can pump from the ground at your discretion unless the basin is adjudicated (extractions parsed out between landowners).

But you can't be "appropriative", meaning pump and serve water to other users (e.g. just start your own water company without a complicated process).

Weve already cut our Residential water use in CA to the bone, and its 110 to q20 in the summer now routinely.
Rates already way up and few are watering trees or grass.
