"The next pandemic-causing virus may already be spreading in Britain - in the country's chicken coups and duck ponds. Some experts believe a human outbreak of avian flu is 'on the horizon' after record numbers of cases in wild birds and poultry in the past year (shown on UK heatmap, left). There are increasing concerns that, as it spreads in animals, the virus could evolve to infect humans and cause a global crisis deadlier than Covid.
After all, that is what happened with so-called Spanish flu at end of World War I, which was caused by a similar strain to the one circulating now (H5N1). Although estimates vary greatly, the former is thought to have killed 50 million people - about one in every 35 of those alive at the time. So far the new virus has been detected in more than 22million birds and poultry globally since September 2021 - double the previous record the year before"
