This very thread is full of Americans who defend their cherished right to shoot to kill legally, who gleefully cheer the needless over-the-top violence in this news story, and who get pissed at anyone who dares suggest this might be a sign of an unhealthy culture of fear and of glorifying violence.

Americans always speak about the right to bear arms and to use them as if it's the most sacred human right and the very foundation of liberty. I've been on GLP for 20+ years, and this is one of the few constants that never change. When I say Americans "LOVE the fact they can shoot to kill without legal repercussions", I'm speaking from experience - it's literally one of the most common sentiments Americans express online!

Meanwhile, some of us actually live in peaceful places where no-one has guns, and where no-one needs guns, because we're not afraid of each other and at each other's throats like Americans apparently are. I was commenting on the case being discussed in this thread, which looks to me to be about an American killing a fellow American, in what to me looks like a reaction fueled by extreme fear. No illegal aliens seem to have been involved here, and no AFRICAN-Americans either.



I live in Sweden. We have accepted about two million immigrants in recent years, who now make up 20 % of the population.

Doing so was of course stupid, and I was personally against it from the beginning. But Sweden is still nowhere near as violent as the US, other than in the immigrant ghettos.

The Swedish "lethal violence" rate is 1.08 in 100,000. And this is an exaggerated number, because it doesn't actually count just murders, it counts all deaths where the police get involved to investigate (including suicides and some accidents).

Meanwhile, the US murder rate is 7.5 in 100,000.
