Message Subject Why do we buy expensive sunglasses?

I don't wear polarized while driving because of the rainbow effect when looking at the side windows and headunit screen. But I understand now there is something called half-polarized made for driving (polarized just enough without the rainbow effect).

As for lenses mineral glass is the clearest, then CR-39 plastic, then Trivex and finally polycarbonate is the worse for acuity.

Interesting.

Although I have a pair of Steiner binoculars with
special coatings (If you don't know, Steiner is good glass!)

The "cheap" plastic sunglasses I just bought give me
ALMOST a similar super-clear view like Steiner glass.

Not exactly as sharp...but close-enough for me.

Is it possible that our manufacturing is simply so good now
that plastic lenses can be made almost like glass?
And for cheap?

Q) How the F' do they make a profit on 10 buck sunglasses?

A) baby + big_smile

Certainly not 30 years ago...or even 20.

BUT....If you make expensive lenses.....
{would you maybe want to keep that a secret?
it's kinda' bad for business
don't you think?}

The only difference I see now compare to back in the day is that the new nice sunglasses (especially the polarized ones) would come with an anti-reflective coating on the back side (you can see this distinctive color while holding the it under a light), while the old stuff would only use a light mirror coating on the front side to reduce glare.

People love to slam Luxottica but they are still a lot cheaper than those uber expensive "luxury" designer sunglasses that come with $20 cheap plastic lenses.

The current traditional Ray-Bans designs still have crystal lenses (mineral glass with some resin mixed in for impact protection and lighter weight) made by Schott in Germany which is the same lens contractor as before when Ray-Ban was made by Bausch & Lomb in Rochester.
