All he had to do is turn over on his back, and float.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84049850 I actually saved myself doing this. I was very young, maybe five. I was told not to go near the pool. We were visiting my parents friends. I was left alone long enough to fall in. I sunk at first obviously. When I popped back up I was further away from the edge, so I flipped over on my back, held my breath, and kicked my feet until rescued. It all took maybe 20 seconds. But somehow I knew to float on my back. Edited to clarify, I know I would have been saved regardless, but in my mind at the moment it seemed like I saved myself. Quoting: Storm* This is a technique that they are even teaching babies now. Crazy but makes sense. We have the will to survive at even the youngest of ages.
