I look at how many stars and read a few good ones plus the 1 and 2 stars. You have to watch on Amazon though. A lot are fake reviews.

I left a 1 start for something a long time ago. The company actually offered me a $20 gift card to change the review!
 Quoting: Paranoiaaaaa

Did you change it??

i found that out a few years when i gave a review on an
Air Fryer and it was not a good review, but it was honest and
in detail why i thought so, two days later it was removed and
so were all the other low reviews on that same product.
would rather have it & not need it then need it & not have it

Research the heck out of stuff before I buy. Many days of research and sleeping on a purchase. Video reviews, text reviews yep the whole shebang.

I learn a lot from Amazon reviews when people go out of their way and offer other related information, it has helped me a lot around the house

and some are just hysterical, there was the story about the gummies for losing weight, hilarious, I think it went viral

I don't have much to say about this.
But I am curious if I'm not normal.
Hence, the need for this poll!

It's for my benefit (and maybe yours too)

I read a lot of reviews. I start with the one star reviews to see if any of them seem legitimate. Many times one star reviews are nonsensical but some are legitimate.

If I make it past that stage I move on to the 2 star reviews and so on. I’m very analytical.

There are always one reviewer who states they found a better one but don't say the name..and checking their review history shows the current review and no review for their better find.
also now that you can't respond to a reviewer it's harder to find the correct info. But I'm retired and read all comments sometimes go to recent comments to see if there is a change to let's say a supplements ingredients.

Great point. Milwaukee or DeWalt power tools have never disappointed me. They're worth 2x the price of knockoffs, especially for longevity.

Do you have the Review Data to support that BOLD claim?

What does Amazon have to say about this?

And e-bay too.

What about the manufacturer's website?

Re: How many reviews will you read...before making an online purchase?
these days, reviews must be deciphered and carefully read to glean truth.

how many reviews has that 5 star reviewer done. often, if it's a fake, they have very few reviews that they wrote before. but that's only the start.

how many people have time to write a review, and what was their motivation? often, i have found, people write reviews when they are pissed off about something. after that, the second reason is that a person wants to reward for great service or product.

but the whole review system is so fucked up, it starts to be very difficult to know what is true and real. with that said, reading enough, and spending a lot of time, can sometimes give you a decent overview, if you know what to look for in the reviews.

I read a sampling of the bad and a sampling of the good.

If they generally line up with each other and my expectations, I give them more weight in the process.

Keep in mind that money can buy fake reviews. It can pad a review section with good reviews, or sink a competitor with bad ones. It's hard to tell what's real and what isn't these days. People get paid to shill for crap products probably more than you think.

You have to be careful because some sellers will sell a cheap and popular item for years like an air filter or a plastic doodad, then once it has accumulated lots of good reviews they will switch out the description and images with a completely different much more expensive item.

I almost bought some wireless headphones with many 5 star reviews when I looked closely and saw that all the reviews were for a cheap air filter.

Me too.

I often wonder how many of the reviews are fake/inflated BS etc. Probably most. I guess it just makes me feel better to see other people support a product even if its crap anyways.

ROFL I can't find anything online to that effect. All the reviews were by registered owners of the mower with toes.

I have two 10 Amp batteries with mine.

I'll read several, may even watch a few video reviews

BUT

I have a rule not to buy anything for at least 2 weeks, since I started doing that I barely buy anything because I usually realise I don't really need/want it. Try it, it works.

That works for me except at the grocer. Everytime I'm food shopping I see things that I absolutely must have that I didn't even know I needed when I left home.

I read any 1-star reviews, up to about 5.

Then I look at customer photos.

If that doesn't put me off I'll read about 3 x 5-star reviews and 3 x 3-star reviews.

Bullshit detector on for fake reviews.

I read 5-10 good reviews that cover product quality/build and use. The I spend the most time in the 1 star reviews, sifting out bitching and retardedness cause they can't read a user manual. Then take it from there.

Re: How many reviews will you read...before making an online purchase?
Unless the product reviews are very numerous, I take them with a grain of salt.

For example, I was looking for a new faster NVR (network video recorder). After reviewing the stats on various products, I found one that I thought would meet and exceed my requirements. However, right out of the gate when this product was released there were just 6 reviews. All were negative. I read these reviews and, frankly, it didn't sound like these people really knew what they were doing. While reading their reviews, it seemed to me their problems were related to something else, such as choosing the wrong type of ethernet cable, data errors, an overload switch elsewhere in their network, unrealistic expectation, incorrect parameter settings, inexperienced, etc. But on the other hand, it was a new product at the time of their review. Could have been a few bugs too. But that was over a year ago. Surely this manufacturer has corrected any bugs by now.

Anyhow, I took the chance and order the thing. Once it arrived, I hooked up my 4k optical PTZ AI cameras to it using quality Cat 7 cables, used a quality intelligent programmable PoE switch, and configured everything. It all worked like a champ. I'd give it 5 stars for meeting all of my requirements. But I'll probably give it 4, because they could have designed the AI interface to be a bit more user friendly and not so cryptic. I did notice a few minor bugs but nothing critical.

But, before that I've been looking for a new snowblower. Found one that mentions everything I was looking for in a snowblower. There were 12,000 reviews, averaging 4.5. I thought that might be the one. And, as usual, I begin reading the negative reviews first. And all of them mentioned the same thing. It's difficult to control over anything other than an absolutely smooth surface. It pulls one way or the other. Well shit, that not my LONG driveway. It's your typical country packed gravel and dirt driveway. In the end I decided my best bet would be to probably buy a pickup truck and put a plow on the front. But, in going to do some more looking before I commit to anything.

I almost never make a bad purchasing decision. When I do decide what to buy, I will know for sure it's the right thing.

There's also those brands I fully trust without question. Took me 15 minutes last month to decide which Kubota zero-turn 52" walk-behind/standing-ride-behind zero-turn mower I wanted. $7.5k (for a new unused 2019 model they found hiding in their warehouse that wasn't entered into their stock computer - compared to $10k for a new 2022 model) and I was hauling it home an hour later. Love the thing. Mowing is fun again. Didn't need anyone's review on that decision. It was a Kubota.

Reviews mean nothing. 90% of them are shills,
either writing in favor of the product or against it.

and, just to make things easy for you: 80% of all the
products are no damn good.

Re: How many reviews will you read...before making an online purchase?
I only read negative comments.

You are thinking how dumb is that ?

Let me explain.A lot of companies have employees spam big sites with positive comments. How wonderful a product/service is blah blah blah.

If you are reading the comments section prior to making a purchase you are already pretty much going to buy the product.

You will get a few thousand reviews up votes confirming how wonderful product/service is.

Go to the negatives where you find consistencies in the feed back from customers.

For instance hypothetically speaking Say Mr Smith bought a Phone from said company, and 6 weeks later the back detached.Below his comment, is another comment saying pretty much the same. And a few more comments saying there are quality control issues with the hand sets.

They all say when they purchased they read only the thousands of positive comments made by Spam Bots in China.

Never fully trust positive feedback .It is no longer 100% a reliable method.

Go to negative comments see if what you are buying will be problem free. And not fall apart down the line.

Companies can spam positive feedback for sure. They can not stop the trustworthy negative comments though :-)
