most anything other stone within viccinity would have been more useful at 'something' than this 15lb stillbirth at being grooved and hafted, save being a sinker of sorts (which is the most applicable possibility).

any further insight/comments?

even at hand and in the moment; it'd seem like a real pain in the ass to re-create even for re-creation's sake

tho it's still wholly likeable, for whatever reason

The old stone weapons...would a rope leave that impression in it?

Something like this, would the rope leave an impression like that over time?

Sure looks like something related to fishing nets or an anchor for a canoe.

Be cautious removing any native american rocks...sometimes those rocks have a mind of their own...

It looks like a very ancient Indian heavy axe or weapon head. A large handle would have been hafted to it and it used basically as a war hammer.

Now you have to think what would they use it against. It would either be other humans or a really big animal.

Moose or bear would be really injured after a hit from that.

It would also be perfect for breaking and busting bones to get out the marrow.

I forgot ground sloths, mastodon, and really big felines along with an occasional buffalo.

They had a hell of a lot more nasties out there long ago than we do today.

.
Assuming it was the head of an archaic “hammer” of some type, one has to wonder what was used to create that groove in it..??

Other stones of the same material or harder, which are obviously in abundance on that creek bank. It is a LOT of hand work to grind it down, but doable, obviously.

that is 100% a Native canoe anchor

if you search for images of Native American anchors you will find a number of similar items

fishnet weights tended to be round stones hollowed out making a stone ring
