My parents, in a round about way, had a hand in my 14 year old brother's death in 1982. They never knew about it, and I didn't tell them until about 8 or 10 years ago.

It really wasn't their fault. They just neglected to tell us something, and that contributed to his death. Nobody could have foreseen the result, it wasn't like it was their fault. But I bet they would have thought so at the time. If I would have told my parents about that, at the time, I don't know what they would have done. I don't even want to try to imagine it.

Enough time passed, I figured they could handle it. You do the same.
