The nurses in nursing homes are notoriously cruel. I am venturing to guess anyone signing up to be a nurse in asylums would be miles worse.

Having emotional damage or having an adjustment disorder should not be a permission slip for cruelty.

Lastly, whoever gets to call in and decide your fate can have much more power over your situation in life than you can. It becomes a game of which person called the police/crisis phone line first and/or most.

With current technology, they no longer need to herd victims together in facilities to perform psychological experiments. That’s all they were, torture places.

Not only do they walk among us, they're now in control of almost everything. These are absolutely the same people who 50 years ago would have been locked up in padded rooms.

I worked in a state insane asylum/mental hospital for three months...part of my nurses training years ago. It was the most interesting experience I ever had in my life. We lived in dorms on the premises.

The problem was that many of these patients are so far gone, it takes an enormous amount of patience for employees. It must be difficult to find workers who can handle it. Most of these patients don't come and go. They are there for years or their entire life. Many are combative/dangerous. There are no cells to lock them up, so many employees are always in danger. Very seldom do many get better. Small changes sometimes takes years. I even witnessed patients getting electric shock treatments. Yikes!

Not sure what the answer is, but they should NOT be walking among us and endanging our lives. I say they should bring back those hospitals. Get the mentally ill off the streets and out of the homes in our communities.

Nope the problem with insane asylums is that they were often used as a means of persecution in the past.

And the other problem is that most of these problems are caused by evil people and the only way to deal with them is to take them out.

Psychiatric hospitals and prisons have a very important place in society. Only when our healthcare system and correctional system deemed it inhumane to institutionalize people and move to “community health” is when our society started to degrade. I’d say it started in the 70s, 80s, and 90s with the closing of start operated psychiatric hospitals. They’re trying to do it again with prisons.

Nah. It started in the 60s and 70s with an anti-psychiatry movement and institutional abuse coming to light. Many of those facilities did in fact treat the patients inhumanly. There were many instances of overcrowding and neglect, child abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, unsanitary conditions, etc.. they were bad places. Another reason they moved toward community health was with the invention of psychiatric drugs. They thought people were able to be integrated back into society.

People need to man the f**k up - life is a big circle, death is nothing special, some people are just a complete and utter burden to themselves and everyone around them.

Kinder to put them out of their misery - as for criminals that as well or a devil's island scheme, let them fend for themselves amongst their own kind.

Mental hospitals have their place - if there is hope for recovery, but not just as holding pens and it is insanity to let them wander the streets.

I am all for opening these facilities again.

But...

The courts will not even issue orders forcing these people to take medications that will give them stability and a normal chance at life. A parent may go to court for their homeless mentally ill adult child and say that I have their medication lined up, a support structure, a place to stay, etc. The court will not do anything to help because they claim the adult child has free will. If a child does the same for a parent with dementia they will issue an order stating the parent is incompetent without hesitation, giving the child authority over them. It is fucking ridiculous.

They closed these institutions as medicine was able to help these people lead normal lives, but will not do anything to make sure they take these meds.

Bring em back, load em up. Processing stations. HUGE NEED for insane asylums again.
