Florida has some of the cheapest electricity in the nation. 11.4c/KWH.

You’re doing something wrong. Your house must not be insulated very well or you keep it at 60F in the summer.

My house here in the upper Midwest is twice the size of yours and my highest bills, gas/electric combined, rarely touch 500. In addition to the house I heat a garage as big as some people’s homes. But it is all very well insulated.

I know why mine is high..but his is 100 higher with a likely more energy efficient home being it's newer

I live in S.Florida house is 1200sq/ft with fpl bill at $192 this month and still a high I think.

I keep house at 76 suring the day and 74/73 at night.

11 years ago I lived in upstate NY house was 1400sq/ft and electric bill was $162 every two months.

FPL keeps telling customers that they are lowest in the nation... I tell them it's BS...

The natural gas is being shipped to Europe, which means low stock and price hikes for Americans. Electricity is also produced with natural gas, so those rates go up too.

My electric company just raised their rates by 112 percent as of September 1st. I posted from New Hapmpshire,I was already paying 204/ month.
Guess what? I have not gotten the end-of-the-month bill yet. But I shut down the pool and the heating season oil tank is only 2/3 full. 4.73 a gallon of heating oil. With a 275-gallon tank.
Yikes and I still have to order a thousand dollars of wood for the stove.

I prepared my house a couple of years ago for excessive energy bills, by downsizing everything.

All my appliances are small and easy to replace now.

So what? The default energy rate for all three of NH's utilities, one of which is Eversource, increased about 100% last month. Stinks, but we're not crying about it. I'd rather have electricity than Disney+. If this causes us to budget for needs, and causes other companies who support deviants to go bankrupt, it's worth the pain.

I'm in Palm Beach County with FPL as my electricity provider, and with 2240 sq. ft, running the A/C at 70 degrees all the time in the summer, I average $170-$210 per month. That's with 3 people + pool pump.

Massachusetts is an interesting state. It is liberal socially but not like extreme liberal like other states. Fiscally… not so much which is why it tends to elect republican governors. It nice to have a republican governor working with a democratic state legislature to keep either from getting too powerful… creates a tug of war type of management.

This reminds me of the late 70s or early 80s, when they convinced people to switch to electric heat, then fast forward to 90s when the heat bills in our local welfare apartments were over $500 a month. Ditto for natural gas, whatever. It's the same scam over and over again.

FPL is in the bottom 25% of electric companies for cost per KWh, meaning 75%+ charge more per KWh.

That's not opinion, it's easily verifiable fact. Lots of resources on the internet will verify that.

You must live in an ancient house (1200 sq. ft is tiny for Florida, the way they built them pre-1970) with poor insulation and ancient appliances.

My Florida home is over 2200 sq. ft, with all appliances less than 5 years old, great insulation, my A/C on 70F all day and night, 3 people living in the home, and my electric bill is the same or less than yours.

Here in Spain we had a 690% rise at the beginning of the year... I'd think myself lucky with a 64% increase

Maybe later this autumn we can start a "saving energy" thread for general purposes this winter. Here's a tip for keeping warm at night.

Before central heating, people used to heat their beds with thin iron boxes filled with embers. They'd place their iron warmers in the bed to warm it before going to sleep.

We can achieve the same thing with hot water bottles. Fill hot water bottles with the hottest water you have and stash them in your bed before going to sleep. On the coldest night two or three water bottles will easily keep you warm once you get into bed. It's best to have the water bottles covered with some kind of cloth or yarn wrap, to keep heat in through the night and also to protect your feet from the very hot surface of the bottles.

Soon there will be a draft to help you forget about the draught.
