Suppressors are compleatly useless on a select fire guns, unless your shooting subsonic ammo... But even then the suppressor will overheat after one mag dump.

Inferring you are on foot. Carrying a bugout bag and your weapon(s).

I believe you will either be way overloaded or have inadequate ammo.

The military has already done the optimization and the answer is the 5.56.

Is it the best caliber for much of anything? No.

But you can carry the weapon and a fair amount of ammo without needing a pack mule. And when pushed into the various duties you need a gun for, it will still do a reasonable job at most.
Like a swiss army knife. It isn't generally the best tool, but it is the one you have with you.

Probably 12ga. Versatile and abundant. Great for self defense, or even with cut shells can use as impromptu slugs for hunting larger game.

He said the 12 ga is for close quarters battle.
