Nope. People had problems with the ruling class. The priests created logical mind traps (koans, etc) to confuse them and attribute this confusion to spiritual disorders which were then said to be caused by sin. The social order is more important than the survival of the community, which is in turn more important than individual survival. Given this set of priorities, which is attributed to God/the universe, it is a joke that this God would care about the spiritual state of a single person enough to set up that loop to silence them. It is a phenomenon that comes from the top of social ladders and is designed to do exactly what you say it does 'naturally.' Hell is all about social control, nothing else.
