You want to be rebuilt to modernity and have security agreements that provide you protection at home and for trade abroad, then you tow the line. Not saying it is fair. It wasn't but considering the aftermath of WWII, Europe in general was in no position to dictate terms if nations wanted to survive in their current form. Considering their experience with empire building, one would have thought that the carrot would have been more appealing than the sticks that they always wielded. Shortsighted on their part. A penalty to be paid for that. Does that mean they had to agree with the Americans on everything? Of course not. But this is the result.

Laughable. France is the only one with a navy to project enough power to keep the shipping lanes open, and even that is limited to the Med. They can access input materials from Africa, and maybe cozy up to Russia (last few months may have created a little animosity), but they need energy and raw goods to create goods to export. By shutting out the US, they will have effectively shut themselves out of the Western Hemisphere, the UK, and Nordic nations. Who is going to buy their stuff? The Russians? The Chinese? Also demographics are not on their side. They are old as fuck, and even if they wanted to consume internally their population is mostly retired and no longer consuming. Tax receipts dwindle. Economies implode. There will never be a EU army, and yet again another reason for the US after WWII to laugh and say, "okay, friends. You go your own way."
