(Savings = TOTAL at bank, checking, cash under your mattress, in your socks/safe/wall) ALL total. This. I’ve got about $60k stashed away (not including retirement accounts or investments) which would cover all basic expenses for my family for 12mo. I can’t comprehend living paycheck to paycheck, or only have enough money in the bank for a tank of gas or a meal out. Something tells me the people with no money in the bank still have expensive cell phones, multiple streaming subscriptions, buy alcohol / drugs, etc etc. At that point it’s a willful choice to put yourself at risk instead of being financially responsible. And no, I didn’t inherit anything and my parents took care of me until I turned 18, but from that point I was financially on my own. I took out student loans, and paid them back, and when I graduated I had an additional ~$10k of credit card debt. It’s all about priorities. If you're over 45 years old, you should have enough money to survive for 3 years in my opinion in these days of financial uncertainty. Chinaman |

I just included my accounts, not my wife’s. Together we’re probably close to 2.5, maybe 3 years worth, if we spent like we do now. If we had to tighten our belts and we avoid hyperinflation it’d last longer. Of course that’s not including taking early withdraws from the 401k. |
