If you can survive one year then it's ok.

This. I’ve got about $60k stashed away (not including retirement accounts or investments) which would cover all basic expenses for my family for 12mo.

I can’t comprehend living paycheck to paycheck, or only have enough money in the bank for a tank of gas or a meal out.

Something tells me the people with no money in the bank still have expensive cell phones, multiple streaming subscriptions, buy alcohol / drugs, etc etc. At that point it’s a willful choice to put yourself at risk instead of being financially responsible.

And no, I didn’t inherit anything and my parents took care of me until I turned 18, but from that point I was financially on my own. I took out student loans, and paid them back, and when I graduated I had an additional ~$10k of credit card debt.

It’s all about priorities.

Not a damn thing wrong with that. Just get off the paycheck to paycheck ride. There’s no need for that stress. Assuming you still have some youth about you, just have to make some serious sacrifices and only short term. I’d like to hear you have 50k in the closet this time next year.

WHY do you rich people always assume that anyone can do what you do??

It's like if I told John Goodman, Roseanne or Oprah: "Hey, I"m slender, if I can do it so can you!" THEY are wealthy and can afford the best care to lose the weight...yet they can't!

It's far easier, a MILLION TIMES EASIER to lose weight when you fat than to increase your income when you poor. Because, guess what?? Losing weight I can do on my own, earning money, I DEPEND UPON OTHERS!!!! I cannot force anyone to hire me, I have the set of skills I have, they're not marketable and that's that! I can try to sell stuff, I can't force others to open their wallet in my direction.

I make about $1,800 every week after taxes working 60hrs a week, my wife makes about $1,000 every week. we live paycheck to paycheck weekly. we spend about 3k a week? lol we live in the now, we'll all die eventually, and then we will wish we had spent that time and money with the ones we loved when we had it. if the world was to collapse, or end, then what? memories are the true riches.

I’m not, but in case of dire need, we could cover that. I just included my accounts, not my wife’s. Together we’re probably close to 2.5, maybe 3 years worth, if we spent like we do now. If we had to tighten our belts and we avoid hyperinflation it’d last longer.

Of course that’s not including taking early withdraws from the 401k.

Not a damn thing wrong with that. Just get off the paycheck to paycheck ride. There’s no need for that stress. Assuming you still have some youth about you, just have to make some serious sacrifices and only short term. I’d like to hear you have 50k in the closet this time next year.

"If you're over 45 years old, you should have enough money to survive for 3 years in my opinion in these days of financial uncertainty."

Nothing is certain. Money could become worthless. Maybe you can't find a home. Your health could fail. Life is now, not tomorrow. It's good to plan ahead, within reason. Make the most of what you have, today.
