They forgot one important thing in the simulation: China will participate in this nuclear war once it sees that EU and the US's arsenal of nukes have been depleted to ensure China will rise as the next superpower. China will finish what Russia has started and finish off its enemies.

Basically it would just make south of the equator equally bad too in the east - fallout and nuclear winter would be even worse. The amount of nukes hitting NATO would be higher. The amount hitting Russia might be less - as they have to split them now and send some to Asia. Nukes going all the way down to Japan, Australia and New Zealand at that point. Nuclear winter covering most of the habitable planet on that side of the earth. South America be one of the safest places from nuclear war I assume. Argentina might be a good spot.

All the worlds leaders should be put in the Octagon for one death match, whoever survives gets to rule, stop killing innocent people because of their Greed.

I don't want nukes flying but this is an unknown outcome, probably horrible, but screw this old school fantasy crap.

How long after bombs drop but before nuclear winter sets in is best to take a quick run somewhere say 15-20 mins run, and then run back for a total of about 1 hour out in it?

Would you be safe to go out say 15 days after it ended for 1 hour?

The simulation appears to be a gross oversimplification.

Problem #1
The only opening move is a massive first strike.
So there will be no gradual ramp up in the number of cities hit.

EVERYTHING WILL LAUNCH AS FAST AS POSSIBLE FROM THE INITIATING COUNTRY. AND THE RESPONSE WILL BE THE SAME.

Problem #2
It does not take into account or even mention:
1) Hypersonic maneuvering missiles.
2) The Russian's doomsday torpedoes.
3) ability of each side to intercept traditional ballistic missiles.
4) Possibility of the US having some ultra advanced particle beam defense weapon, (like Reagan claimed back when he was the President).
5) EMP strikes
6) Satellite warfare. Either with particle beam weapons or lasers, and if communications or navigation satellites from either side will be taken out, and the impact that will have to targeting accuracy.
7) attacks or lack thereof on naval assets.
8) height of the nuclear bursts. It is assuming ground bursts, which is not logical. Ground impacts create massive amounts of fallout which will travel far and impact one's own friendly areas. Mote likely to be high elevation bursts, which will generate almost no fallout. (only the mass of the weapon).

It is very possible that one side might be able to intercept almost all inbounds. Or one side might have almost no such success.

There are a lot of variables and a lot of unknowns.

Obviously the first attack needs to try and wipe out anything that can result in a counter-launch. And timing of the first hits (at least by the Russian nuclear torpedoes) against important coastal targets (DC, NYC, LA, Norfolk) and Naval targets like carrier groups and missile subs.

Then the question of NATO countries is extremely complex.

And if Russia is involved, surly China and N Korea will get into it.

Not sure what India and Pakistan would do. We just toppled the leader of Pakistan, so perhaps they are a US vassal state now. India might sit it out or they might pick a side.

All missile launch points would need to be fed into the simulation's target simulator. At sea, and in all the various hundreds of US military bases around the world.
