Sinus infections can spread to the brain.

The infection can produce blood clots that may travel to the brain area and lodge inside the brain. If the clot is big enough it will cause a massive stroke, but most probably it will be a small clot and just get stuck in a small artery and not result in an obvious stroke. However, that clot is chock full of the virus which will then spread to the brain tissue. In that case you get Encephalitis.

But most likely the infection moved to the layers of tissue that is all around the brain, which is called Meningitis. In severe cases you can have seizures and can easily result in death.
