So tomorrow, I'm going to buy about $100 of Evan Williams whisky for post-SHTF trade. What size is best?

Green or Black? I just got a liter of black for $14.99 and considered that a decent price hereabouts. Two years ago I could get the same bottle for $11.99.

Before I retired 12 years ago, I bought a stainless steel distiller to try my hand at basic chemistry... for the same purpose you mentioned. But after doing a few "runs" I got burned out on the whole process and gave the equipment away to a hopefully more focused friend.

Liquor will be gone within a few weeks of SHTF. Don't kid yourself talking about using it for barter.

Most drunks will die in a couple of weeks post-SHTF.

The real trade value will be the wealthy whose stash runs out 6 months to a year later.

You don't need the expensive stuff for trade. The cheap stuff will be just as tradable and you'll be able to stock more of it.

What do you hope to trade it for? Tampons and make-up are another good choice. A lot of fake chicks out there would never let their true form be seen, even during TSHTF

I'm a prepper of over 20 years and keep a fully-stocked pantry anyway, but when COVID really kicked in a couple of years ago, booze was the first thing I added to my inventory. Bought two 1.75l bottles each of Gin, Vodka, Rum and Bourbon [all bottom shelf stuff, but it was still drinkable if there was nothing else!] and just now have used up the last of that stock.

But at my age [72] it no longer takes me 4 drinks to pass out and I figure a single one of some decent whiskey will take care of my mood very nicely. That and my greenhouse, that is!

Nothing smaller than a half pint is going to interest an actual drunk unless you trade for almost nothing. Those baby airline bottles are just teasers. Give 'em enough to get a little bit of a buzz, anyway.

It be smarter to be a lot of smaller bottles of cheaper crap.

I've read some of the works of preppers who lived through Bosnia/Argentina.

One said forget booze; takes up a lot of space. Goes quick.

YEP! In my stock I have several, mostly refillables and several cans of Butane; but the old standby -a ZIPPO- will never disappoint in peace or war! Well-worth a little investment but don't forget the fuel and extra flints!

1.75 liter bottles give you a lot more for your money.

We all have them and sometimes the finding of them IS violent.

Couple words of advice, tho you already seem to be wise. Unlike canned food which may last for decades, hard liquor will last forever. They have drank vodka recovered from centuries old shipwrecks. As long as no sea water seeped in, it was just fine.

Don't put all your stocks in whisky, many will want vodka and vodka has other uses (disinfectant for example) too.

Definitely don't let anyone know you have stockpiled, keep it hidden, and hidden in more than one place.

Make sure you stock up on the stuff you will really need at pre-SHTF prices before you find yourself having to barter for it. Much safer to already have something than have to go out into a lawless wilderness to barter for it.

As far as sizes, if stocking for your own consumption than half gallons or cases of fifths would be best, but for barter, the advice previously given of airplane size bottles is very good. Perhaps pints of really cheap stuff in plastic bottles

I am a bourbon drinker but many people here don't like it. A mild, blended whiskey might have a wider demand.

Shine is good enough for them.

Best investment is a still, bags of sugar, distiller's yeast and fruit.
