How Did You Treat Your Dogs Heartworms GLP?
Took her to the vet for rabies shots since we now live in town and had her senior blood workup done.
She came back positive for heartworms(no symptoms).
She is 13 but a healthy and active 13 as I've always feed her grainfree kibble and very little scraps.
Boxer/dane mix and about 70lbs.
I would like to treat this as home so will have to order meds online as I trust the Vet industry just slightly more than the human medical system which is not at all.

What yall got for ya boy GLP?

I had a 9 year old pup that was on meds and died of heartworms

Her sister is still going strong at 12 and i took her off the meds when her sister died

At 13 i dont think there much you should probably do at all in my opinion, but im not vet. I just know heartworm treatment once they have them can be pretty sketchy and dangerous, but so is having them

The treatment is an arsenic based drug and can be very hard on your dog.

As your dog is 13, I would discuss the treatment outcomes with your vet.

I remember my dog having to get surgery and she was around that age and lived to 17. This was awhile ago so prices may have gone up to fix it and there may be other options. It cost $350 I think. She had to be on heartworm prevention medicine afterwards too.

Ivermectin is used a heartworm preventative and it works well in most areas.

The problem is when the worms become adults. At that point, Ivermectin doesn't work as well and the worms that are killed can clog the dogs heart and circulatory system.

The vet stopped prescribing the ivermectin based heart worm chews. The new stuff seems to make the dog sick. It never occurred to me that I was feeding her, gulp, poison. Thanks for the heads up.

I would recommend Heartgard (Ivermectin) for prevention, but since the worms are already established, veterinary treatment is probably the best way to kill them off.

It has to be done gradually or you can cause more harm than good.

Here's a good article about it.

I know that's not really what you want to hear, but sometimes you just can't fix things with GLP magic potions. If you kill off too many worms at once, it could destroy her lungs.

Yep. Im assuming some "broke loose" or whatever and thats what killed my 9 yr old pup so suddenly. One morning it was like she was gasping for breath, took her to the vet and he gave her a steroid shot, got home and she died 2 hours later.

Talked to the vet the next day and told him and he said "yeah i knew she didnt have much longer left". I was like mother fucker you couldve told me that. I had no idea she was about to die or i wouldve had him put her on down

Still not over her loss to this day to be honest with you and its been 3 years

Re: How Did You Treat Your Dogs Heartworms GLP?
Are they larvae or adult worms?

I treated my do with prednisone and amoxicillin for her larva. After a month she still tested positive for larvae , but not worms. Then an injection of ivermectin per one vet (other disagreed and said ivermecton was bad. Dog is fine almost two years later.) Finally a repeat of the amoxcillan and prednisone protocol.

I had to keep her (5 y,o, ab) from exercising too much. After that I started using the 6 month Nextguard once every thee months for six months, then the three month pill every three months.

The prednisone is not good for older dogs, so read up on it before medicating.

Sending love to your old pup.

This is pretty similar to what I had in mind.
Fenbendazole and Ivermectin to kill them and amoxicillin for any infection prevention.

Thanks for the answers GLP keepem coming.

Re: How Did You Treat Your Dogs Heartworms GLP?
If your dog is asymptomatic, you can put it on preventative and ideally it should have doxycycline for co-infections. Specifically wolbachia coinfection.

There's a lot of resistance in areas to either ivermectin or milbemycin, So you should find out what works best in your area.

If you are using ivermectin monthly, be sure to dose carefully because dogs are much more sensitive than people and the dose they get in the monthly preventative is very small (ie 272 mcg per 51-100 lb dog) that's MICROGRAMS not milligrams. Overdose in dogs can lead to seizures and other neurologic symptoms including death. White-footed herding breeds sometimes carry a gene that makes them more susceptible to this reaction.

The one shot treatment of imiticide is a arsenic-based compound and is hard on the dog and the pocketbook. It is considered the treatment of choice, but many veterinarians will use the treatment above especially in cases with financial hardship. Most dogs do very well on that.

There is a risk of killing too many adult worms at once and causing emboli.

A lot depends on where you live, some places are much more endemic for heartworm than others.

Not medical advice. I use ivermectin monthly. 1% injectable placed in a gel cap based on weight of the dog. Hide it in wet food because it tastes like crap.

Wormwood combination.
We have cured heartworms in a dozen dogs with this.
Give one a day, we wrap them in a half a slice of cheese.
It us a slow kill, the worms starve to death, and are absorbed by the body.
You don't have the fast kill that can cause a dogs heart to clog and cause death.

20 something years ago, I knew a guy that raised New Foundland dogs

he told me every week he would feed them a raw chicken, inside he would rub a small handful (maybe equivalent of 5 capsules) of Cayenne pepper

he said if you do this you will never need to buy heart worm meds EVER

I have cats, so never tried but still remember it for when I get a dog in the future when the kids are older

The horse wormer, Equimax is ivermectin and praziquantel and specific for bloodworms, heartworms and other arterial filaria. Dose per weight, just like a horse, administer daily for 30 days.

These blood parasites are zoonotic. They are spread by blood meal insects and carry a 40% transmission rate to hosts. This includes you. The other method of transmission to humans is through the handling and consumption of organ meats of wild game and neglected livestock.

If you see yourself as high risk for infection, and you develop A-Fib, consider a 30 day course of Equimax before taking crap heart pills from your doctor. Amazing results!

Not a suggestion to anyone, but "I" give my dogs a dose of ivermectin every month. None of them have come back heartworm positive and it's a very prevalent thing where I live. I give basically the same thing that this guy gives. We have 11 dogs, and I talked to the vet out here and he said it wasn't a problem giving them ivermectin once a month.

Use at your own risk, this is not a recommendation.
