My mom had the same problem. They surgically implanted 2 posts that her denture snaps down onto. No more problems, eats steak, salad, whatever she wants.

My sister had lower implant dentures for 15 or 16 grand.

Better than regular dentures. They implant posts in your gum and the dentures snap on. They don't slip and they also protect from future bone use.

Re: Desperate advice needed for dentures!!!
eating a healthy diet without dentures OR teeth is completely possible

pureeing food isn't necessary - just cook food until soft enough to gum - braise meat & veg together, etc

take smaller bites, experiment - spit it out if necessary

avoid eating out if embarrassed about it

(yup, going on 10 years - similar issues & I couldn't overcome the gag reflex)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84543757

This. I have had dentures for 15 years never needed them for eating. Can't tear into an apple or corn on the cob, but everything else, all meats easy.
 Quoting: Page8844 54268416

I worked for a lady who had implants (all teeth) and she tore into corn on the cob! It was amazing. Those implants are like a second chance. The gums still need to be treated as if the real teeth are still there as gum health matters alot.
 Quoting: TripleReiki

I wore a partial denture for 10 years through my 30s. When I got the money and time, I had four implants done in one go. It was a life-changing decision. Probably one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I believe they have a way to do like four implants top and four bottom and connect dentures to it or whatever. Might be half as much as what was originally quoted.

Re: Desperate advice needed for dentures!!!
If it's the grip, then maybe try using a mouth guard (you can buy them in the Sporting Section at Walmart for about $1). Buy Adult size, thin one. Heat the mouth guard in very warm water make sure it's very pliable
then mold it to her mouth, putting the dentures on top of the guard, press to fit while biting down, work quickly, wait a few minutes till it sets. If it doesn't feel right then reheat guard and try again. You could cut the guard for whatever area you need. Not sure if it would work, but for $1 it's worth a try. I use to make dental appliances years ago. She needs more grip due to bone loss. This may give her a snugger fit.

im sorry your mom is suffering! i dont know what she should do about keeping her dentures in place?

what i do know is this: in the meantime, get her a kick ass blender to make all sorts of smoothies and protein shakes. my teeth are fucked too, so i eat stuff that doesn't require much chewing. you can make some delicious and nutritious shakes that might help her gain some weight.

i really hope things turn around for her, and she gets this worked out.

Get implants !
 Quoting: tiger1

Implants would be the most wonderful problem solver if they didn't cost so much.

The place called clear choice would in one day put in ALL the lower teeth, unfortunately for just under 30 grand.

IF I had that kind of money, and if I needed lowers done, I would surely go to that place, we went there, and the equipment they use ensures that the implants will not strike/hit any nerves that would cause facial paralysis
 Quoting: TripleReiki

What about going to dentists in Mexico or South America. They do dental tourism. Much cheaper. Like a vacation. They treat you very well.

Re: Desperate advice needed for dentures!!!
My poor mom in law recently had to have all teeth extracted and then put in the lower dentures. Bad news is, her jaw is not symetrical, there is extra bone growth on the right side, and also on the right side, there are pockets in the gum (due to bone loss).

She tried adhesive strips, which worked ok on the good, smooth gums along the left side, but wouldn't hold on the right because of the gum pockets.

She tried the pastes, but pressure from shweing squished any excess paste out, and she ends up swallowing that, plus the paste is so messy in the brush she uses when she tries to clean the stuff out of her denture.

Topping it off, because her jaw bone is not right, there is really nothing for the outer part of the denture to grip onto, which leaves the denture floating, and the doctors cannot do anything about that no matter how much they tried.

A suggestion was made that "maybe" she could have some of that jaw bone surgically removed, and she can just see more pain and trouble with that along with money involve for something that may make things worse in the long run. They suggested implants, but that was thousands of dollars more.

She called me telling me about this hard time she's been having. She wanted me to find out if Alien Tape was toxic or not. I searched and searched to help find if Alien Tape was or not, and cannot find any info pertaining to that. Poor thing is desperate.

Along all the trouble she had with her teeth not allowing her to eat proper BEFORE the denture, and AFTER the denture, she lost alot of weight. I feel really bad what she is going through and am sure there are other folks out there who probably have the same problems keeping their denture on.

I told her NOT to use Alein Tape or any other type of glues until something for sure can be found out there somewhere that works, and is known to allow people to finnally enjoy eating again.
 Quoting: TripleReiki

She can get a bone graft.

Not particularly expensive unless you consider $2k or so a 'small fortune'.

Just get the dentist to fill the gaps so the jaw bone is relatively even.

More expensive option is to go to Mexico and get graft and implants, roughly $15k for entire bottom jaw.

She must have bad dentures, you get your dentures done then 6 months later you go in and they refill and refit the dentures to compensate. My dentist charged 250.00 for the 6 month future refit redo, when I had mine done.

You can actually get a silicone type memory foam type lining added to your dentures...

Ask her if she has gotten her refill refit yet, if not go back to the dentist and have him do it.

You aren't supposed to have to use but a little dab of denture adhesive.

I don't think her dentures were fitted right.. did she get the 350.00 one day type or the 2500.00 take your time with a good dentist type?

No. They cause migraines and your body can reject them. Not only that your jaw has a lot of nerves as well. Couple of decades from now we're going to see a lot of implants regret like breast implants.

Takes about 6 months to get use to dentures. Patients go without them at home and eat just fine. If still healing just wait until healing is done.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80518909

After not being able to eat right for many years, I got implants. It took almost 2 years of surgeries to restore my jawbone, including bone grafts, BEFORE I could even get dentures, or implants. I literally had jagged pieces of jawbone that were sticking out of my gums, and only 7 teeth left. Only one of the 7 teeth left was in decent shape, and it had a root canal. It has been over 2 years since I got the last of the implants put in place.
Yeah, it cost a lot, but it was more than worth it. A lot of the cost was the surgeries to restore my jawbone. I got the medium priced implants. There is cheap, mid priced, and expensive as heck.
I went to one of those production line places first that you see in advertisements. DO NOT go to them ! They don't guarantee squat, and what they advertise money wise, and medically isn't truthful.I lost my down payment by cancelling with them, but they kept on adding costs to the list, etc. I also found out I would have to be on liquids for 6 weeks.
I ended up going to a specialist who had extracted some of my teeth previously, all of them molars which had been crowned, but snapped off at the base. I had multiple surgeries to extract the 7 teeth left, multiple bone grafts, the jagged edges of jawbone protruding through my gums removed, and eventually, the implants put in place. He did give me a discount. The total amount should have been $65,000 with all the multiple surgeries to repair and restore my jawbone besides the implants themselves. I had it all done for $50,000.
Yeah, that is a lot of money, but about the price of a new vehicle today. It was rough to go through all the reconstructive surgeries, but it was worth it to be able to eat normally again.
Seeing what I had to pay over the previous 20 years to crown multiple teeth, continually patching the other teeth, and the multiple extractions, it was more in total than what the dental implants cost ! In retrospect, when I had the molars crowned, I should have had them replaced with implants at that time. I could have spared myself a lot of pain, and expense, in the long run.
With implants, you just brush them like your original teeth. I go in twice a year for a checkup, and at least one of my visits a year, they remove the implants, and thoroughly check them, clean them, and screw them back in.

She got their best one called Ultimate.

For now, maybe they can put that fitting thing on the denture to ease her until her gums are better.

I did tell her about the bone grafting and the posts that can be put in and onto the denture for a secure fit. Her eyes widened and I told her sometime to consider that when she feels more up to it.

Some years ago, I went with her to get a root canal done. She mentioned to the staff that she does have seizures due to previous traumas. The doctor gave a little laugh, I guess thinking she was joking about the seixures. He gave her the numbing shot, and then took off for almost 40 minutes. She was sitting there knowing that by the time the doc was to come back, the numbing would wear off. (Please note that she is also terrified of needles). She was so brave though taking the shot.

After so much time had gone by (just a couple minutes before doctor was to come back in) she started convulsing on her left shoulder and arm. Had to yell for staff and we eased her to the floor. After about ten minutes, it subsided, but I was real pissed at the doctor pulling that stunt with her, leaving her hanging like that. The staff, though, were understanding.

I used Care Credit for part of the dental work. I am 68. I don't know how old your MIL is, but my mother was thinking about implants at one point, when she was about 81. She didn't go through with it, and at that time she could have had full implants put in for $15,000. She ended up getting dentures. They never fit right no matter what the dentist did. She wasn't able to eat a lot of foods, as she couldn't chew properly anymore.
Even older people can get implants done, unless they are in really bad health. FTR, my mother died 6 days before her 96th birthday. If she would have got the implants, at least she could have ate well for the last 15 years of her life.

Is there a dental school nearby? She could get really good cutting edge care there for a reduced price.

She may need to go to a different dentist. It sounds like they may not know what they are doing or are not solving issues so they can up sell to implants.

There’s tons of videos on YouTube on how to make dentures. Maybe you can find something on those to help out with the fit.

Hello, My son is 34 and has never been able to chew due to severe Cerebral Palsy. We have three blenders on our counter. The "Vitamix" most powerful, can blend a bag a Mc Donalds into a smoothie. Plus two additional smaller blenders stepped down in power and size. In this house there is no use eating until it is blended. I show him the food before I blend it so he has a good idea about what he is eating.

Medical tourism and dental tourism is a thing.

A quick search on the internet shows Hungary and Turkey are rated best for dental tourism procedures. Cost is very low and quality is very high. In Turkey you can get a full set of implants for 6,000 to 10,000 USD. The same work in the US costs $50K to $80K.

I found flights on Expedia from Chicago to Ankara for $775 round trip.

Mexico is also supposed to be a decent place for dental work but I would do some significant research on the dentist and clinic. Personally I would rather pay more and go to Europe. Italy has some of the best and most affordable health care in the world, so you might want to research that as an option, too.

This is the kind of thing credit cards are for. Also, it's not that difficult to get a bank loan for the dental work, it's worth a try.

Many people can't wear bottom dentures. My mother never could. She could eat most things everyone else could. Your gums probably get tougher after awhile. If she can't wear them or get implants then she should still not have any trouble eating once she gets used to it.

Thank you for the thread OP. I appreciate all the comments and advice. I am having trouble getting a good fit too and interested in hearing experiences with implants. I hope you do not mind if I ask a few more questions.

Is it true medicare now covers some implants?

Do you get a refund if your body rejects or is allergic to the implants?

Does anyone have experience with veneers or caps for the front teeth to cover chips and cracks?

What a horror story. One that will likely end many of us. I'm hoping for a heart attack before I live too long. Old age is a dog shit existence.

I have seen dental issues end many people. It's not pretty. It's horrifying. Brush your teeth kids or have enough money to get implants. Look at that shithead Steve-O. His teeth rotted out of his head, now the degenerate has false teeth and I hate the sight of his head every time I see it. He does not deserve to be living his lifestyle. He is a piece of shit who happened to be able to afford a second chance. Most cannot afford it, yet are far better people than that clown.
