Clam down, diesel fuel will NOT run out in 25 days…
Thanks to the current administration, the country currently has only an estimated, and rather alarming, 25 days supply of diesel fuel. Sounds ominous, but people are misunderstanding what this means.

Refineries are currently producing diesel fuel in quantity; because of this, as long as the refineries remain in operation, we will not “run out”. The 25-day figure is a projection of how long it would take, at current consumption rates, to use up all available refined diesel currently in storage. The trucks, construction equipment and trains aren’t going to stop running 25 days from now unless the refineries all suddenly stop producing diesel, which, short of a thermonuclear war or coordinated sabotage by a state actor, is improbable in the extreme.

Granted, the cushion amount of refined product needs to be greatly increased (60 to 90 days would be a much more comfortable range), but any talk of impending diesel doom is unwarranted.

We hear these doom statements regularly. We're running out of diesel oil and additives, blah, blah, blah.

We won't run out but supply disruption is way more likely....that's the issue and it's a real issue.

True. With supplies this tight, there may begin to be spot shortages in certain areas that will end up impacting the entire country. The reserve should never have been allowed to get this low.

If the refineries back off from producing diesel, or more diesel gets used, then the number of day’s reserve will decrease; if they start producing more diesel, or less is used, the number of days in the reserve will increase.

Why the US has a diesel shortage

There's an article from alt/right conspiracy site Forbes, spreading wild rumors about the situation.

They seem to think that screwing with Russia may have something to with this.

This isn't all bogus. In Dallas Tx area, Gas a little over $3 a gallon and Diesel is almost $5 a gallon! That is almost a $2 difference! That spread is a record and signaling a supply issue.

Yes the "25 Day supply" is misunderstood, but it does signal supply issues and at a time with high possibility of a major war. (Not just a coincidence IMHO).

Agreed, the very fact that we have a few week’s supply is the major reason for diesel’s high price. The Forbes article that another poster linked above is an excellent primer on what’s actually happening.

Re: Clam down, diesel fuel will NOT run out in 25 days…
Refined diesel was one of the critical imports the US was getting from Russia.
Not sure whose diesel we are replacing it with, or whether or not we even still have the domestic refinery capacity to produce it ourselves?

I think 30% of our imported diesel fuel was coming from Russia until the sanctions kicked in.
And the sanctions didn't immediately shut off shipments, but rather prohibited any future purchase contracts with Russia, as I understood the situation.
So if that is the case, the last pre-sanction diesel shipments from Russia are either still trickling into port...or only fairly recently arrived.

I don't think we are out of the woods yet, just far better off than the rest of the G20 Nations...other than energy rich Russia.

The other supply line issue that the US has to now work around is sourcing the replacement for the Baltic heavy/dirty crude that we were sourcing mostly from Russia with which US refiners make diesel.

Domestic drillers/frackers produce mostly light/sweet crude good for refining into gasoline, but bad if you want to make diesel.

I suppose the US will either have to strong arm/outbid other Baltic producers to make up the gap...or steal it from someone like Venezuela?

And then there's that untidy issue of the (pig urine?) diesel additive shortage that is also a critical resource.
I wonder who we source that from? Maybe it comes from chemical/fertilizer giant, BASF...who just announced that they are shuttering down in Germany and Grexiting to China.

Russia also just happens to be only viable supplier for the special uranium mix France depends upon for its reactors...and the higher grade that the US needs if it wants to pursue modern small scale nuclear energy projects.

Bidenomics: biting off the hand that feeds your mouth...and much of the world.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84321048

“At times, carriers are having to visit multiple terminals to find supply, which delays deliveries and strains local trucking capacity,”

Diesel inventories nationwide are at lowest seasonal level ever heading into winter, and some areas in the Northeast have already started rationing fuel.
