WTAF? Reality gone weird. VR ‘Headset That Kills the User If They Die in the Game’.
The world took one more step in a strange and bothersome direction.

Palmer Luckey, defense contractor and the father of modern virtual reality, has created a VR headset that will kill the user if they die in the game they’re playing. He did this to commemorate the anime, Sword Art Online. Luckey is the founder of Oculus, a company he sold to Facebook in 2014 for $2 billion. This is the technology that Mark Zuckerberg rebranded as the foundation for Meta.

Oh this guy is a fun one at parties I bet:

“The good news is that we are halfway to making a true NerveGear. The bad news is that so far, I have only figured out the half that kills you,” Luckey said. In SAO, the NerveGear kills players with a microwave emitter. According to Luckey, the device’s creator “was able to hide from his employees, regulators, and contract manufacturing partners. I am a pretty smart guy, but I couldn’t come up with any way to make anything like this work, not without attaching the headset to gigantic pieces of equipment.”

Unable to make the perfect recreation, Luckey opted for explosive modular charges. He tied them to a narrow-band photo sensor that detects the headset views a specific red screen that flashes at a specific frequency. “When an appropriate game-over screen is displayed, the charges fire, instantly destroying the brain of the user,” Luckey said.

Go ahead and lie to yourself some more, buddeh.

And because of the limitations of the design, and the danger that it could fail and kill people at the wrong time, he has still yet to try it out himself, he said in a blog announcing the new system.

Mr Luckey said that while the technology at the moment is “just a piece of office art”, intending to be thought-provoking about game design. But he also said that it seems to be the first time such a system has been created, and “it won’t be the last”.

It would be a wet dream of many to have such a system in place to casually weed out individuals claiming the game as the cause.

Re: WTAF? Reality gone weird. VR ‘Headset That Kills the User If They Die in the Game’.
This isn’t a perfect system, of course. I have plans for an anti-tamper mechanism that, like the NerveGear, will make it impossible to remove or destroy the headset. Even so, there are a huge variety of failures that could occur and kill the user at the wrong time. This is why I have not worked up the balls to actually use it myself, and also why I am convinced that, like in SAO, the final triggering should really be tied to a high-intelligence agent that can readily determine if conditions for termination are actually correct.

At this point, it is just a piece of office art, a thought-provoking reminder of unexplored avenues in game design. It is also, as far as I know, the first non-fiction example of a VR device that can actually kill the user. It won’t be the last.

Well, they passed (or trying to pass) new laws for kids to be able to go for assisted suicide without parental consent. I am sure the game will have some check box as "user agreement" for kids to check off to be able to start the game. The user agreement can have the developer, etc covered as the kids can sign off their life right there and no parental consent is needed for the suicide.

You know this is sensationalist bullshit used to piggyback political demonization, don't you?

This paragraph say it all:

"Luckey sold Oculus to Facebook for $2 billion in 2014 and left the company in 2017. He later told CNBC he believed he was fired for "no reason at all" and speculated that his right-wing political donations could have been to blame."

They simply want you to believe he's an evil right winger.

that seems easy.

many ways ti accomplish that.

my question is how well do they replicate the experience?

im guessing not very well.

its probably weak metaverse style graphics and a primitive euthanaisa delivery system like a needle the injects something in your brain through your eyeball or something lame.
