This is how we vote in the UK.

Everyone on the electoral register signs up to vote. You get sent a personal voting card that is uniquely numbered. You hand that over at the polling station and are given your ballot paper which is completely anonymous. You vote. The polls close - the polling stations close at exactly 10 pm that same night. The votes are counted by hand, immediately after polls close, at community centres with local and/or national media present. The vote totals are then declared for each county. We know who has won (for general election) by early the next day!
