Wonder how many of the players actually want it. It morphed into 'Soccer' in the UK. You are quite right it comes from 'Association Football' (to differentiate it from 'Rugby Football') when the two games went their separate ways from a hybrid game. Many Brits and Europeans by the look of it think of 'Soccer' as an American word/term - it's not Brits coined the term soccer in the late 1800s to refer to Association Football, the sport we now know as soccer/football. "Soccer" was picked as a way to differentiate from another kind of football—Rugby Football.
