“Then they started the [defibrillator] paddles, and it just blew up, everything,” Kathy said. “I saw that and I just burst out.”

Kathy said she saw flames cover her husband’s body.

“He got burned in the throat, the face, the head, the chest and his hands. And he got burnt really bad, he was on fire, and I said, ‘he’s on fire, put him out,’” Kathy recalled.

in reading the local news report, they stated that oxygen, or O2, is flammable, and mentioned a Missouri health filing... 3 things are needed for combustion- fuel, heat and oxygen... oxygen will not burn unless heat and a fuel source is added

I would rather live as if God exist and find out He doesn't than to live as if He doesn't and find out He does.

The article stated Bobby Ray was bed ridden for the last 7 years then later that the wife didn't work and was dependent on his income?

Just found that interesting. I am sorry for this man and his family.

Hospital employees go through an intensive orientation. Part of that does include electrical safety. Equipment should be inspected regularly. This sounds like a freak accident. Of course that is no comfort for the family.

I saw an episode of ER where the paddles lit a man’s chest hair in fire. If I remember right, it was because they shocked him bare-chested instead of using pads on his skin.

Idk how accurate that show is. Obv this has happened SOMEWHERE before or else the show wouldnt have come up with it.

Spontaneous Combustion caused by the Defib paddles...

Did they wash down his body with hand sanitizer and then try to Taze him...

I used to be a Biomedical Engineering Technician. Used to repair Defib's. Before the Technician/Doctor applies the paddles, they are suppose to lubricate them sufficiently with a form of Dielectric Gel. This improves the contact with the skin, lowers the impedance at the contact point, and prevents any flare-ups from any body hair...

Looks like they didn't use enough Dielectric Gel to prevent a flair-up...

I work in an oxygenshop.
When oxygen is around, any fat, grease or oilbased substances will be the oxygen. Vaseline caused some messy accidents including oxygen in hospitals in the past. Unskilled staff maybe?

used to be, patients would end up setting themselves and the room on fire in the hospital.

They are on oxygen from copd caused usually from smoking or some other reason, and light up a cig or a joint in the bathroom WHILE on a cannula. BOOM.

IT still happens occasionally.

"She said Bobby Ray was bedridden for the last seven years, and earlier this month, went to the hospital for bed sores and a foot infection."
"Eventually, he was transferred to TriStar Centennial Medical Center, where Kathy said he coded and staff tried to revive him."
"Kathy didn’t work and relied on Bobby’s income."

Fund me page says

Quoted from FundMe page:
they amputated his foot because of the infection. They also had to go in and enlarge the veins to get blood flow back down to his foot.

Over the next couple of days, he complained about chest pain. On Thanksgiving Day, the pain got worse. A nurse came in and adjusted him, which caused his blood pressure to drop dramatically.

They had to pull in a team of nurses, doctors, and the crash cart. They attached the paddles to shock his heart back into sinus rhythm. Once they sent electricity to the paddles, it sparked and caused his oxygen to explode and create a fireball that burned him.

Um no. Oxygen is the oxidizer. Everything else, and I do mean everything, is the fuel.

Remember basic science class in high school?

When I was a young nurse, we had a bedridden patient who was a heavy smoker. He was dying of lung cancer.

Doctor left orders to turn off the oxygen at his bedside when he wanted to smoke a cigarette.

Fuel- any oil, petroleum jelly, /fabric fuzz-

Apollo 1 Astronauts (3) died in a n OXYGEN RICH ENVIRONMENT!

1 spark- they were dead within a couple of minutes- as MORE
OXYGEN CONTINUED TO COME IN TO FEED THE FIRE !

A welding torch uses a flammable fuel to heat steel-

THEN- the OXYGEN LEVER IS PUSHED / The oxygen then

CAUSES THE HOT STEEL TO BURN & and melt .(cutting the steel)

Welders oily gloves have “exploded” (popped off ) their

hands from oxygen leaks squirting oxygen into their warm gloves !

Case closed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 84844779

Spontaneous Human Combustion happens when the entire metabolism
of the human body goes into gear at the same time,
like a super critical mass nuke, and the body bursts
into flames because of the heat generated.
Rare, but it happens.

Oxygen is an oxidizer, not the fuel. You can even make a cookie become the fuel by saturating it in pure oxygen. Look on Youtube. Also if my theoritical knowledge is still somewhat up to par, every % oxygen in a room above normal levels increases flammability with 10%, or something close enough like that.

(All three died)

“Immediately after the fire, NASA convened an Accident Review Board to determine the cause of the fire, and both chambers of the United States Congress conducted their own committee inquiries to oversee NASA's investigation.

The ignition source of the fire was determined to be electrical, and the fire spread rapidly due to combustible nylon material and the high-pressure pure oxygen cabin atmosphere.

Rescue was prevented by the plug door hatch, which could not be opened against the internal pressure of the cabin.

Because the rocket was unfueled, the test had not been considered hazardous, and emergency preparedness for it was poor.

Oxygen doesn't burn. Fuel burns when combined with high temperature and Oxgygen.
