The actress' death was confirmed on her Instagram Monday evening

Kirstie Alley, the star of Cheers and Drop Dead Gorgeous, has died. She was 71.

Alley's children, True and Lillie Parker, announced the actress had died after a short battle with cancer. In a statement to PEOPLE, True and Lillie confirmed that Alley died on Monday.

I always loved her confrontational nature. About 25 years ago here in her hometown of Wichita KS she bought a beautiful 1920's-era mansion in a still-classy older area and was immediately assaulted by snotty oh-so-PC neighbors who didn't want a "movie star" living right next door, stupidly fearing paparazzi would descend from all over the world here to a fly-over state hoping to catch a shot of her out mowing her lawn... which she did on a regular basis wearing a big, floppy hat which only infuriated them more!

But the thing is, whenever she was in town few people treated her any differently because she always remained just "one of us" - very approachable, friendly and willing to stop and chat for a few moments without a shred of attitude or Hollywood self-absorption. She considered herself just another working girl who got a few breaks... until losing roles after packing on an extra 100 pounds. Then she created a pretty funny little series called FAT ACTRESS where she again showed that scummy industry as it really was.

In one memorable scene she had a panic attack after seeing the dial on her bath scales spin out of control and she frantically called both 9-11 and BFF John Travolta who tried to talk her down. He showed up at her door along with the Beverly Hills cops and John smoothed the whole thing over by saying he'd "known her since she was boning cowboys back in Wichita."

But, back to that turf-battle: Kirstie retaliated a couple of months later by setting up a HUGE Christmas display in her front yard just to piss off those nasty neighbors and it worked, since they actually filed a injunction to force her to remove it. But the Judge didn't see it that way and ruled in her favor, even praising her holiday spirit!

I went to the same high school as Kirstie where she was two years ahead of me and recall she once caused a stink by substituting "cheerleaders" in old Blonde jokes and going after them every chance she got. So -God bless her- it's clear she never changed!

You gotta' LOVE her for that much alone!

She spoke out about the vaxx and being able to choose, she said there should be no mandates. She was unvaxxed according to her Twitter account.
