No, they're not special at all. The whole point is to make some claim to specialness so they won't be killed. But the best claim against being killed is not having killers in your midst yourselves. They privately laugh at that, so kill them with abandon if the inclination takes you. Their god doesn't govern their ethics, so he doesn't exist. And without him, it is just fine to do to them as you please.
