Salt licks to draw deer into the yard
I live in a small town in south coastal Texas.

Increasingly seeing deer and thought I would try to draw some into the yard
for nothing other than to marvel at them and perhaps catch some nice photos
through the security cams.

Picked up two salt licks. One looks like a big 7 lb stone, the other a red brick
which is supposed to have some apple flavoring.

Anyone ever use these things?

Hey
ask an expert
I was born and raised in Salt Lick, Kentucky.
I can tell you them things is salty and animules love to lick em.
Hunters go to jail if they get caught shootin deer offn em.

Salt is a rare substance out in the woods and the deer all crave it. They'll like you real gud.

Just let my German Shepherd out for the night and there were 4 big does in my yard and they all scattered in different directions, my dog didn't know which one to chase...lol

But to your salt licks I would add a couple of handfuls of deer corn that you can also get from a co op store and that is usually guaranteed to bring some in...maybe a squirrel or 2 as well tho.

My friend worked in the woods and the guys would take a leak outside the campsite. Turns out deer would come around and lick their dried urine, he said because they wanted the salt. Just another idea OP.

Someone said that human urine smells similar to doe urine, after it dries for a couple of days. It's supposed to attract buck. Don't know if it's true.

I've been feeding the deer here for decades.
They really love cracked corn. Sometimes I'll put out some apples, or old bread.
Recently, I gave the squirrels some old pistachios, and was surprised when the deer started eating them, with the shell.
Probably because of the salt.
