Here is my read on this:

The elites understand the phenomenon of dopamine. They've understood it for centuries. If you think about it, everything they do to keep us distracted, or to act in a certain way, is done through either reward (dopamine) or punishment (fear).

So it's not just sports, it's music, it's drugs (pharmaceutical and recreational), etc. They know all of our triggers and use them. So just about anything that triggers are dopamine receptors is being used against us. When that doesn't work, they try to scare us into submission.

They want a population of sick, fat, Netflix watching, sports watching, drug abusing people they can control. At least until the brain implants. Then they'll just control us that way.

They argued in court they don't owe you a fair game.

I have to basically agree with you. Although there is some bonding potential, a recognition of the necessity for strife, effort, health, and teamwork ... it basically appears to be a consolation prize for the over worked masses who need an exciting distraction from the grind of their lives. Obligation, uncertainty, mortgages, car payments, and kids that suck up whatever monies are left and eat everything in the house. Wives that are now working and want to be in charge of everything but not take the responsibility for it. People who aren't up for intellectual or spiritual pursuits because they just don't have time for it, if not the ability to do it.
Maybe we should be thankful that they have an outlet, something to participate in, be a part of, support, believe in when many of their problems are outside their ability to solve directly and in short order ... something to bring people together even if it is circus. I do agree with you and I never watch it alone, for me I consider it a total waste of time but I'm glad it's there. It serves a purpose and its good for young people to learn and develop social and athletic skills. I think it has its place and function and I can appreciate it to some extent, but the most of me personally abhors it.

Sports as a form of mass media has negative consequences. Athletes get paid entirely too much as well.

Sport, in its pure form, represent something sacred to humans. They are a substitute for war and in some sports, the objective is like war-lite.

Boxing is the king of sports. It is a gentleman’s agreement to do combat constrained by certain rules with a defined rule set for scoring. I grew up playing every sport but in my 30s, I only practice boxing/kickboxing.
