You don't need a compass when you have lived in the same location for 30 years and the front of your house faces directly east, and you watch the sunrise every day.

I have noticed this too

Study up on the change in location of the sunrise throughout the year. It does this because the earth is a rotating sphere that is orbiting the sun. The axis of rotation is tilted about 23.5 degrees with respect to the plane of orbit. In the winter the axis of rotation is tilted away from the sun and so the sun rises a little bit south of east and in the summer it rises a little north of east. The amount of variance is dependent on how far north of the equator you are.

That's what happens during the winter solstice.

You should look up more often. The sun changes it's position everyday, as does the moon.

And the stars in the sky change from season to season. Right now you can see Orion's belt. Three stars in a row to the south at night. When it gets dark and it's not cloudy look for it.

Every year. It does this every year and has since people have been observing it. The only places it doesn’t do this are places located along the line of the equator.

For the record, the movement of the location of the sunrise throughout the year is not a conspiracy.

After the solstice. Solstice means sun stands still. It will hang low in the sky until around the first of February. Then it will start to move quickly to the north as we approach the Vernal Equinox.

Do you have any houseplants in your windows? Around the beginning of February they will start to get new leaves. They are getting more sunlight and will begin to grow.

It's fun to watch the seasons change.
