Strange weather
I'm at our Lake basically where ohio Indiana and Michigan all meet, and it is both foggy and snowing which is pretty uncommon around here ( I know in the mountains this happens constantly) Also for the life of me I can't figure out what is causing the fog, the lake is frozen and we are about 6 degree s warmer than the dewpoint at 28 degrees.

Also precipitation wasn't supposed to reach us until tomorrow morning with the big storm. Just some weird atmospheric conditions right now I guess.

Re: Strange weather
I can't figure out what is causing the fog
 Quoting: Bgpete34

It is called water vapour. Water vapour is everywhere. Fog (condensed water vapour) normally forms at low laying areas, not up in the mountains. Additionally, air temperature is not necessarily the same as ground temperature. The ground/lake can be frozen (below freezing point of water) yet the air can be warmer (above freezing point of water).

Regardless, your eyes can not tell the difference between micro ice crystals to that of fog (liquid condensed water vapour). Sublimation still occurs on surface of material objects (i.e. vapour is still formed even after contacting below freezing surface). Typically, liquid fog can still be below freezing point (especially if rich in salts) then start a phase change to solid with some sublimation occuring from solid to gas states on surface.

Usual reason why fog (water vapour) is still liquid is due to salt concentration within solution, air temperature higher than material surface temp and migration of molecules from a warmer area.

Also precipitation wasn't supposed to reach us until tomorrow morning with the big storm.

Wow. Meteorologists are wrong again? What a shock!

Not weird. Not strange. Just an ignorant person not understanding.

Re: Strange weather
We had strange thick fog a couple weeks ago. I enjoyed the show. I could see the moon directly above and a wall of particles or fog around me 360 degrees about three feet away every which way but loose.
