The story of how Sha’Kyra Aughtry saved Joe, a developmentally disabled man, from the blizzard appeared on the SweetBuffalo716 blog’s Facebook page and has caught the attention of people throughout Upstate New York and the world. According to SweetBuffalo716, Aughtry heard Joe in distress and crying for help. With the help of her boyfriend they found Joe and her boyfriend carried him out of the snow bank and into their home early on Saturday, Christmas Eve. “During the blizzard he must have gotten disoriented and he ended up North of where he lives. He didn’t have his gloves with him and with the windchills being what they were, his skin was burning and he was in real rough shape and he was crying,” said Ray Barker, the program director of North Park Theatre where Joe works. Joe has been the custodian at the Western New York landmark on Hertel Ave. for over 40 years. SweetBuffalo716 reported his sister thinks he went there Thursday, got scared and stayed over, and then decided to walk back to his home. Joe had been out in the storm so long that Aughtry, a mother of three, had to carefully remove his frozen clothing from his body, cutting his socks off and cutting the straps of a Wegmans bag from his badly frostbitten hands. She used a hairdryer to remove his pants, which were stuck to his skin. Once his icy wardrobe was removed, Aughtry cleaned him up, fed him and covered him in warm blankets. SallyValentine (OP) User ID: 79601558 ![]() 12/27/2022 10:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | i just watched the fb live videos that sha'kira made on Christmas day. at 6:30am on Christmas Eve, she found this frozen, mentally disabled man crying for help and brought him inside her home. at 6:40 am she called 911. nobody came. she spent 2 days caring for him. not just any 2 days, but Christmas eve and Christmas day, while her 3 young kids (and she herself, and also Joe) worried that he might die. she knew he was in desperate need of medical attention due to his severely frostbitten hands. she called her family for guidance in terms of how to tend to his blisters and wounds. she watched the football game with him. they became friends. finally after 38 hours of waiting for emergency personnel to show up at her house, she went on facebook live and asked for help to get him to the hospital. within 45 minutes, some local guy with a plow had her street cleared and some other good people came and carried joe out to their truck. sha'kira rode with him to the hospital so he wouldn't be afraid and did a facebook live video all the way. the man who drove carried joe in his arms into the ER and set him down gently in a wheelchair, while sha'kira made sure the staff understood how nervous and scared he is. it's really all so heartwarming. |
