Does anyone else do Coconut oil pulling for their teeth?
It seems to be one of the best things you can do naturally for oral hygiene. The only difficult part is you're supposed to do it for 15-20 minutes it can take a little getting used to. But worth it

Benefits
Benefits of oil pulling with coconut oil may include:

Killing harmful bacteria in the mouth
The mouth contains a diverse population of bacteria. Some are harmful and may lead to tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease.

A 2016 studyTrusted Source with 60 participants found that oil pulling can reduce the population of bacteria in saliva and support oral hygiene. The researchers say that coconut oil is a safe alternative to chlorhexidine, an ingredient in some commercial mouthwashes.

Reducing bad breath
Bad breath generally results from a buildup of bacteria in the mouth. This may be related to poor oral hygiene, infection, or gum disease.

A 2011 studyTrusted Source found that oil pulling may be an effective natural treatment for bad breath.

Preventing cavities
Cavities stem from tooth decay. They result fromTrusted Source bacterial buildups, poor oral hygiene, and sugar consumption. Plaque is a coating of bacteria, saliva, and food particles. It coats the teeth and can damage the enamel, eventually causing cavities.

According to 2016 researchTrusted Source, oil pulling may reduce the population of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth. With brushing and flossing, oil pulling may be another way to support oral health.

Reducing inflammation and improving gum health
The bacteria in plaque can contribute to gingivitis, a commonTrusted Source gum disease that causes redness and swelling and inflammation. It can also cause the gums to bleed easily. ResearchTrusted Source suggests that coconut oil can reduce inflammation.

In addition, according to a small 2015 studyTrusted Source and another 2020 studyTrusted Source, oil pulling with coconut oil can reduce plaque formation and help prevent plaque-induced gingivitis.

Whitening the teeth
No scientific evidence has confirmed that oil pulling can whiten the teeth. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that it may clear stains from the teeth’s surfaces. There is little risk in trying to whiten the teeth in this way.

It can help to add a little water, and even mint-oil/toothpaste. Maybe a tiny bit of ginger would help too.

You're also supposed to wash all the oil off with water after.

Thanks for the reminder.

Yeah I'm actually doing it right now as I made this thread lol. Never spit it into a sink or toilet because it can clog them up. Spit in a sack or cup that you can throw away.

I do it then floss then brush my teeth then of course rinse my mouth to get rid of all that junk. I just started back yesterday haven't done it in a long time.

I do it often and its really amazing.

Any oil works, only reason for coconut is it's taste is nice.

But if cost is an issue you can use other oils.

... Except motor oil, don't use motor oil

Seriously though, oil pull every couple weeks and and a tarragon brush once a week... Amazing!

I've tried it, but not sure I noticed a difference.

I mean it seemed pretty time consuming and difficult, what's the purpose of it? Wouldn't swishing hydrogen peroxide be easier?

That being said, has anyone ever tried vitamin K2 to get rid of plaque? I've heard people say that it removes it. I've tried a few times, not sure if it works or not.

A recent study, performed by a bunch of brainiacs at Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland, tested the effectiveness of a variety of oils on dental hygiene. They tested coconut oil, a variety of vegetable oil, sesame oil and olive oil. Of the oils that were tested, only coconut oil was found to prevent Streptococcus mutans, which is the scary-sounding name for an acid-producing bacteria that is present in your mouth (yuck!) and is a leading cause of tooth decay. It damages your tooth by binding to the enamel of your teeth which weakens the enamel.

The findings of this Irish study has lead Dr. Damien Brady to accept the idea that coconut oil and oil pulling might be a viable alternative to the chemical maintenance of oral health.

But always use extra virgin organic cold pressed coconut oil. It's a little more expensive but I bought a big container that'll last me a year for like $22 at a health food store.

Re: Does anyone else do Coconut oil pulling for their teeth?
I'm considering adding coconut oil to my diet solely for it's antifungal properties. Just bought a jar of unrefined virgin CO last night.

I'm hesitant though because medium chain fatty acids, the caprylic acid found in CO, in particular for this function, plays a role in bone marrow mechanisms, and can actually promote mestasis of certain types of cancer into the bones.

Now I'm conflicted because I'm already having a health issue that's affecting my skeletal system that doctors have not yet been able to figure out so far after already ruling out some of the more common possible etiologies.

Don’t know. I’ve been using a waterpik and just read recently someone said his dental hygienist doesn’t recommend them, can create gaps between gum and tooth leading to infection and loose teeth, so who knows. Guess I’ll use toothpicks for awhile.
